86 302 not holding fuel pressure

My 86 still has the full load of emissions stuff. Recently I had a long cranking/hard start problem which went away when I changed out the high pressure inline fuel pump. I also replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter. Now, it starts up quick like it should, but I notice if I shut it down and then push open the schrader valve on the fuel rail, there's just a tiny dribble of gas, really no more than a few drops. If I push the release pin open when it's running I get plenty of high pressure fuel there. No fuel pressure test kit available within 50 miles of my town. Anyone have any ideas why my fuel pressure leaks down so fast after shutoff? I thought they were supposed to hold pressure for a long time to make startups easier. My manual says the regulator detects the engine shutdown (no vacuum) and closes, isolating the pressurized line between inline pump and fuel rail.

well its possible you have an injector leak then, only way to know that though is to pull plugs and see which are wet after motor shutdown, and to perhaps order a pressure tester.

Yeah I was thinking maybe a leaking injector, but when the motor starts, no miss or black smoke as if a cylinder was loaded up. I guess I'll have to do like you say and pull plugs.

you can also pull the vacum line going to the FPR and see if gas comes out of it. also check your oil for the pressence of fuel, you should be able to smell it on the dipstick

I checked that vac line before and after changing out the FPR and no sign of gas there. Ditto with the fuel in the oil. I'm glad it's starting quicker now anyway. I'll keep after it, and thanks for the info.
