advance timing

Hey all I have a 93 ranger with the 2.3 electronic timing and for whatever reason the timing is acting retarded and I am curious if instead of taking the belt off if I could advance the timing like a distributor and advance the plugs? Or will the ecumenical simply relearn and start acting up again.

Thanks,
Yonu
