Oil sludge in upper intake !!

Good morning. I would like thoughts on this. I am of course rearching all on this at this great site. I currently own four Ford cargo vans. Just bought a 2002 E250 with a 4.2l V6 with 170,000 on it. Before buying this van two of my vans have the 4.2l V6. A 1998 E150 with 526,000 miles (379,500 on motor) and a 1998 E250 with 478,000 miles (57,000 on engine) Yes you read correctly. My point is I have quite a bit of experience with the 4.2l V6. Owners reason for selling was it smoked terribly and very poor fuel economy?!?! The van did smoke very bad when cold but smoke lessened as I drove it 36 miles home. However it had a very oily and strong fuel smell. This van has the plastic upper intake. Knowing problems with the 4.2l V6 egr, imrc and coolant leaks I planned on replacing all at a minimum. This is a long winded intro to what I need thoughts on. When I removed the top cover a the upper intake I was very surprised to find a heavy build up of engine oil sludge!! I'm not talking about a film, I'm talking thick, heavy sludge. Like you would find on a very poorly maintained engine below the lower intake. I have the lower intake off and yes it's the same there. So-any thoughts on this?
