many automakers install such things in what appear to be random places, with the intent of preventing some strange vibration that may occur without it.

another possibility is that someone installed it as a jacking point so tire shops won't damage the diff cover when jacking from that point, as they might if they jack there without the extra component.

in any case, posting a pic would help us identify it

Well, I've never seen one there, but it's probably the first thing I described in my post above. It does seem strange.

Does the shift indicator dial have an D with a circle around it? If so, it's an AOD (Automatic Overdrive), has 14 trans pan bolt holes.

Late model AOD's are electronically controlled, dunno if you can install a floor shifter. "Dog house" (engine cover) takes up most of the space where a shift lever could poke thru the floor.

sounds like an AOD. p-r-n-(circled d)-d-1 - AKA 4-3-1 shifter. this is typical of a non-computer-controlled AOD, if i remember right.

as for the possibility of a floor shift, its possible in theory to have the shifter anywhere you want, even up on the roof, but you would have to make the right linkages to make that happen. step 1 is to measure the floor shifter you like and see where it would end up on the floor around the doghouse, and decide if thats something you want. then you just have to fabricate the linkage from there to the tranny

Transmission pan uses 14 bolts to attach it to case. And the 'O' was a typo (which I've corrected), I meant to type a D.
