Ford Considering Aluminum for Next Generation SUVs

First, they came for the F-150. Next, the world. Or at least the Expedition.

Edmunds made a claim a few weeks back that Ford is considering converting Expedition and the Excursion to an aluminum body a la the F-150. Though, you probably didn't need a crystal ball to see that coming.

Door dings galore. The sheet metal is already so thin. Plus with Fords crappy paint, the whole car will flake. Nice.

So I guess they're bringing back the Excursion? Or do they mean the Exploder?

based on all the issues Ford has already with Aluminum in their vehicles...I'm not sure how I feel about this. Every single model that Ford has in production currently has Aluminum panels...and they all have corrosion issues...except the SD line-up which has no Aluminum panels.

I can just see it now. 5yrs from now we'll be reading reports about Fords literally falling apart up North. All the Salt mixing with water will eat the frames of these rigs and leave swiss cheese.

I wonder what the projected MPG #'s will be?

Well Aluminum for a car is great, see Audi A8. I'm not sure if ford has what it takes to execute it.

Door digs, accidents etc will be a non issue. Lot's of body shops (good ones at least) have experience with aluminum already so the only difference is the F-150 expedition will be a smaller item to repair.

I personally wouldn't mind an aluminum cab/body, the improvement in braking and handling would great as it stands now Ford is so far behind the curve it's not even funny, I feel pained driving my expedition after getting out of the wife's QX.

I wonder if anodizing the aluminum body panels would be better? Obviously the color choices would be very limited. But, it might last better.

A red or silver anodized aluminum Expedition might be kinda cool looking.

Wife's 2004 Explorer had aluminum hood and the salt air from the Gulf Coast just bubbled up the front of the hood. finally went to a steel hood and new struts.

Aluminum bodies???? will now have to consider what I first cut my teeth ...Dodge....!
