GOTTs mod debate

Well I haven't crunched numbers or done the mod myself, but I have read endless posts about the GOTTs mod and the benefits it will bring to acceleration and power, but I have read disturbing posts saying " what were ford engineers thinking reducing the intake diameter... Obviously they had their heads up their asses"... Now I work in the engineering field on nuclear reactors just as a background, and a very very basic physics concept is area goes down velocity goes up... So again I have not done the numbers... But does just opening up the intake 1 inch really going to make that big of a difference, especially when you are still restricted by the diameter of the throttle body anyway I feel changes would be minimal at best, and I feel like a placebo effect has taken place on many people's feeling towards the power increase... I understand its only ten bucks to do this modification but still just wondering

I think you are probably correct. The gains are definitely minimal at best and most likely only seen in the 4000+ RPM range, which most people rarely reach. Placebo effect is probably definitely prominent. However, like you said, it's a $10 modification and 30 minutes of your time so I say do it anyway. I have it done to mine, but I didn't really feel much. I mean, I thought I did slightly when I first installed it, but again, placebo effect was probably a thing.

Who knows? We need an aerodynamic engineer to chime in...to discuss Bernoulli's principle. Maybe then we'll have a realistic answer.

Lol yeah I do not want to go through the madness of even trying to obtain the figures to plug into bernoullis...

Makes sense, that's why people don't throw a 5" exhaust on, you lose velocity at real world engine rpms.

Yes, I think you are right about slight improvement mostly at high acceleration. Passing on the highway, etc. I'm not a drag racer so I can't comment on that end. I installed this years ago before I ever heard of GOTTS. Not sure were I got the idea but I think it was worth it. I have a little different version then some of the pics I've seen and it does'nt look much different from factory.

No carb, No Bernoulli to it.
You are.only allowing air draw to be less restricted. Think, high flow air filter. It is not of course, but as the Gott's Mod is still in series with your filter, the effect is the same. You go from ~3.14 sq in to ~7 sq in. Flow ABILITY might increase by the sq rt of 2, or 1.141... or resistance be the inverse, 0.7 of before... but only on that section, which is still in series with the filter, manifold, etc. Let's dream that overall we get 1% economy, or HP at top end rpms. Ford would have juggled CAFE against cents for more rubber and plastic and bigger dies and molds. CAFE is at lower rpms - not much effect w this mod. But it sounds FUN! 1% of my year's gas is $20. Breakeven in 2 years? LOL!
