302 holly 4brl 600

I am having a problem with my engine staying running. I just had my holly 600 rebuilt with all new parts, IE jets pumps ect. I have also put a fuel regulator inline with fresh filter and new mechanical fuel pump.

When I start my bronco it runs and idles fine. The fuel filter fills with and stays full of fuel while at idle. Once the truck is warm I start down the road, in first gear it is fine, once I shift into second gear it seems that the carb is loading up and wants to stall. I have to push clutch in and feather the gas till it over comes the problem and/or it stalls out.

Once this happens you have to pull the filter off and let all the fuel drain out and put it back together and it will start back up and run for just a few minutes.

The engine is a 302 with in a 1973 Bronco three speed trans with a Holly 600.

It seems that a vacuum maybe created before the carb some how. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Where to start ? I'll bet you've got more of a carb tuning problem than a fuel delivery problem. You completely left that part of the equation out. How did you set up the carb when you bolted it on ?

A friend of mine set it up. I checked the float levels and it appears that the level is fine. Just at the bottom of the screw holes. I took a set screw out of the linkage bracket that goes to the secondary to allow free movement, but that did not change anything.

The idle screws on both sides have been adjusted but I am not sure to what. I was told that I should turn them all the way in then out at least one to one and half turns out.

The jets and floats are stock Holley Rebuild for a 600. I did not do the rebuild and had it rebuilt for me.

What did you set the regulator at ? You may also have the wrong powervalve in the carb too. Is there a choke on the carb ? That too, can often cause the problem you descibe.

I have run the pressure everywhere from 3 to 5 1/2 psi. It has a manual choke and the choke it in the open position I believe. It has a stock manual pump.

really needs to be 5-7 psi that is the optimum pressure you might be getting the volume but not the pressure at high rpm levels you need

I turned it up to 5 1/2 psi and did not see any change at all.
What baffles me is if I take the filter off and drain all fuel out of it and connect everything back up it with reprime and run fine in the idle position. Once you put it in gear and start down the road it loads up and shuts off.

I think I will try to run the idler screws in and readjust if that doesnt work take it off and send it back to the person who rebuilt it and have him take a look at it. Thanks for the help.

Check to see if the distributor is advancing the timing. No advance, and it'll act pretty much the same. Also, what is the base timing set at ?
