New to me '65 F250 4x4

Hey everybody, here shortly I'll be picking up a 65 F250 4x4 from my girlfriend's Grandma. My girlfriend's Grandpa bought it new in Denver when they were living in Cheyenne. I plan on restoring it back to original as I can. It's all original except for the cab haha. Her Uncle rolled it many years ago and somebody put on the cab to a F100 2wd. Next few days I've gotta run around and try to help her get a replacement title for it and on Tuesday were going to throw it on a trailer and drag it to my place.

Is there any way I could figure out all or most of the stuff that would have been on the original warranty plate? I've gotten the serial number off the frame but that's about it.

Post that # up and someone with the books or cd will probably be along to interperet that for you. In regards to what other equipment might be on the truck. It looks like a 352 motor in the pic you posted of the engine comptment. That was the first year for the FE motor in the pickup trucks. As far as the gearing if the front and rear axles have not been messed with there still might be some tags to tell you what the gearing was or is supposed to be. For an F250 4wd it should have had a Dana 60 in the rear with Dana 44 up front. The gearing most likely would be 4:56 front and back. It should have a 2 speed trans case dana 24 if still stock. It would have been alot of work to put a 65 2wd cab on a 65 4wd chassis. Does the current cab have a step inside the door and is the battery under the passange side floor board? If so they might have used a 64 cab they still had the step inside the door and the roofline would be right with the 65. If it is a
2wd cab from a 64 or ealier it can be converted to 4wd cab easy enough. Same with a 65 2wd cab but it wont be as original need a cab with the inside step for 4wd. Good luck with it and try to post up some pics of it that are a little bigger and welcom to FTE fellow 4wder. Great to see all these 4wd getting back on the road.

Edit if 4 speed trans it would most likely be an NP 435. Unless that has been changed. Look at pics of my builds in projects forum and you will see alot of what is suppose to be stock on these rigs.

If the cab has been changed, I would assume the doors have too, which means none of the codes including the VIN stamped on the Warranty Plate (located on left door face below latch) will match original configuration.

Since the IDIOTS at FoMoCo THREW AWAY all the records for these trucks decades ago, there's no way to discover how they were originally equipped.

Cab step, visible when doors are opened: 1961/64 F100/1100 / 1965 F100/250 4WD / 1965/66 F350/1100 / 1966 F250 4WD

No cab step: 1965/66 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100 4WD

Yeah the entire cab and doors were replaced and as usual they didn't replace the warranty plate. The serial number off the frame is: F26DR590257 and on the warranty plate on the door is F10JK512126.

The pictures above should link to bigger ones. I wasn't sure how big they were and didn't want to blow up everybody's screen with giant pictures.

F26 = F250 4WD / D = 352 2V / R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant / 590257 = 1965 .. assembled September 1964.

F10 = F100 2WD / J = 223 I-6 / K = Kansas City MO Assembly Plant / 512126 = 1964 .. assembled March 1964.

Thanks NumberDummy. That's mostly what I had figured on the correct serial number minus the production date. Any idea on what the GVW / Model number on the warranty plate would have been on the original cab?

1964/66: There's only one SERIES code (1st 3 digits of VIN): F26 = F250 4WD, but there are three different MODEL codes:

F260 = F250 4WD ~ 6,800 lbs. GVWR / F261 = F250 4WD ~ 4,900 lbs. GVWR / F262 = F250 4WD ~ 7,700 lbs. GVWR

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

Would the GVWR be related to the axle or were there differences in the springs that would change this? Thanks again for all this wonderful information!

All F250's came with Dana 60's, but there were differences in number of leafs/spring load rates. Dana 44 front driving axle could have either 3,000 or 3,500 lbs. capacity.

Dana front/rear axle ID tag located under one of the bolts that retains inspection cover to housing, but today...many of these tags are missing.

Weight of truck, driver, passengers and cargo should not exceed GVWR, otherwise as you can see, Warranty void.

Thanks again. I'll have to cross my fingers and see if I'll be lucky enough to find any of the ID tags on the axles.

Count the number of bolts that hold the backing onto your closed knuckle front housing. My 63 250 4wd has 8. I believe if you have more than a standard axle for higher gvw you will have 12 bolts. My spring pack on the 63 front axle is 6 leaves.

Spent most of the day getting the 250 moved to my place. Took forever to get onto the trailer. Now I just have to move it to the back yard, clean out the bed, and get crackin.
