After Transmission Service, truck stalls in reverse

Today I took the time to do the transmission service on my truck. It was straight forward with all of the great write-up's and video help and I have it completed... one problem when I first put the truck in reverse to back out and take the test drive it stuttered a little backing up.

Put it in drive and it seemed to shift through the gears just fine. When turning in to the auto parts store to get some break cleaner to clean off the splash the truck revved higher and seemed to slip.

Checked the fluid level and added some fluid and then shifted through the gears with my foot on the break. The truck stalled in Reverse. Started back up and continued to go through N-D-2-1 and back without issues. Hit reverse and all was good. Got out and checked fluid again and all levels looked ok.

Back in the truck to go home with two cans of break cleaner, put the truck in Reverse and it wanted to stall, but pressing on peddle it backed up ok.

Drove home about 1.5 miles and the truck seemed to shift through the gears fine going forward. Pulled up to the house and put in reverse and it wanted to stall, but I was able to keep it going by applying peddle.

So, what did I do wrong?

Part Number on the box from FORD reads YC3Z 7A098 BA

I'm using Marcon V from Napa (19 Quarts) with a clean pan and proper torque of 10 Ft Lbs on the pan bolts. I was VERY careful to check and double check everything. I pulled the old filter O-Ring (well stuck) and pushed the new filter in until it "clicked".

Just wondering what might cause this issue.

This is an 02 excursion 4x4 4R100

Thanks in advance!

Looking at the filter that came out of the truck, the part number is YC3P-7G186-BB

I have 19qt's of new fluid in the truck with an extra quart to use as a top off if needed..

Either it is a shallow pan filter (part numbers mean nothing to me) or it's low on fluid. It is REALLY hard to get an accurate reading right after filling the trans. Fluid stays in the dipstick tube and gets on the dipstick causing a false reading.

That's probably an engineering number, not a part number.. They stamp engineering numbers instead of "part" numbers.

I wonder why Ford does that, just to confuse us????

Thank you both! Mark I was really hoping to see you post here. I'm letting it sit over night so all will drain down. What is the best way to check fluid level, cold or warm?

The truck will be sitting on a level service all night so I can check in the morning either cold or allow it to warm up and check it. The stick has dimples for both cold and hot.

I'm all ears for you Mark, thanks for posting!

The cold marks are useless. You can only get an accurate reading warmed up.

Thanks again! I'm out test driving it now. I might have over drained on the last 6qt purge. I'm clearly seeing fluid on the stick now and I'm at operating temps with several 5 mile laps. I'll report back.

So far initial testing is positive! I have added another. 1/2 QT as states above and driven the truck about 15 miles. It is shifting great and very smooth and I can now use reverse without it stalling on me. I'm feeling better, thanks
