v8 to v6 swap

Looking at buying a 1993 F150 4x4. Is it possible to swap in the Inline 6? I really don't need the v8 and I'm looking for something more economical. I would do the 7.3 but I don't have the money for the engine and transmission as well. If this has already been answered sorry, I am new to the site and could not find it using the search.

Yes it's possible but you're probably money ahead just buying an I6 truck from the start.

Thanks for the input guys. I would like to get the I6 from the get go but I haven't found any that are 4x4, in as nice shape as the truck I'm looking at and nowhere near the price ($2900) just seeing what options I have available. Is there no real difference in mpg between the v8 and I6?

the six will get a little better MPG but as has already been said you can buy a heck of a lot of fuel for the cost of the engine swap.... Now if you were buying a v8 truck with a bad engine for a really cheap price it might be a different matter..

Which V8?
All else being equal(same truck with the same trans, gearing and tire size) there's not much difference in fuel milage between 5 liters configured as a 6 cylinder or 5 liters build as an 8 cylinder, both are capable of mid teens city and higher on the highway.

I just finished up swapping a I6 in place of a blown 302 in my 89 F250. I have a 92 F150 300/E4OD truck so all parts were there for me.

I used the 92's engine and engine bay harness and wired/repined the firewall connector of the 89 truck. That was the most time consuming part as I could not find a firewall pin out for the 89 and 92 trucks(did find a 93 Bronco which had some diff to the 92). Had to trace each wire in both harness to verify each wire.

As I was using a 92 engine in a 89 truck I had to do the above. For you just find a 92 to 95 truck with a I6 engine and use the engine harness.

You will have to swap out the engine frame perches as the 302/351 and 300 are different. The 302 mount on the driver's side are riveted in with 3 or 4 rivets(have fun in a junk yard if you need a 302 perch)! I used a air cut off tool and buzzed the heads off and replaced with grade 8 bolts to hold the cross member together. The 300 perches will bolt right in place as the holes are there for them, thats good in a junk yard, only bolts to remove them!

The fuel return line was shorter from the V8, so I had to cut and lengthen it and darn thing still leaks. I hate those plastic lines.

The AC hoses are different, you need the 300's hoses and compressor(totally different mounting from 302/351).

You also will need the 300 I6 ECU. Make sure its for the proper tranny if you have E4OD!! I am using the 92's ECU but I did keep the AOD tranny in my truck(I still have the E4OD if I decide to install it) I know the ECU is pissed off not seeing the E4OD but it still runs the engine till I find a ECU for a C6 truck or a manual ECU.

Tonight I finished up some AC wiring issues and tried fixing that fuel return leak. I took it for a drive and noticed more power down low than the 302 had! Hopefully the mileage will be better than the 302's 14MPG.

Ah just remembered, I had to swap out the throttle cable AND gas pedal, they were different for me(89 to 92) but may be the same for the 92 to 95 trucks.

Here's my thread I started.... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...300-i6-in.html
