I can get a tuner but from my understanding, the only significant mpg improvement will be with a dpf delete. And with me being a citizen of the most emissions controlled state in the country (California), I would have a difficult time getting a smog check...unless its easy to remove and reinstall?
You are right, the DPF delete is what really brings these trucks into a more usable light.

You could install a delete pipe, which would be reasonably easy to swap factory exhaust back in if needed.

If I didn't get a tuner and DPF delete for mine, it wouldn't be in the driveway anymore.

I have a 2010 6.4 bone stock and it has been a great truck. However, I tow 95% of the time and drive highway miles 80% of the time. I get 15 to 16 mpg empty(well with a gang box full of tools in the bed) and I get about 10 to 11 mpg pulling my 24'-0 enclosed trailer weighing about 10K.

I would check your mileage the ol fashion way. I only get 8 around town. The lie o meter says I'm getting 13. The best advice you have above is to avoid the 6.4 unless you plan on doing exclusively highway driving. It's too bad Ford hasn't offered an upgrade to the urea based system, like the new trucks have.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I do check my mileage the old fashioned way and I am consistently getting between 12-13 with only city driving. 2009 F250 PSD CC 4x4 (bone stock). I do however, drive like an old lady though (keepin the turbo gauge under 10 and the rpm's under 2000 during take offs).

08-10 F250 6.4

Well I sprung for a used 2010 King Ranch w/ 60K miles on it back in Dec 2011. I bought it because I'm a big Ford fan and always wanted a the King Ranch trim. Now with the cost of diesel and my crummy fuel mileage, I'm a little bummed, but still enjoy driving it. I sure would not buy a Dodge or GM from Obama Motors.
I have only drive it 6K miles and have yet to experience the DPF regen that is so often talked about on these forums. It could be that the original buyer of my truck did the DPF delete, I don't know how to tell.

I am sure it has gone through the cleaning of the exhaust filter. It will do so no matter what at least every 630 miles (approx) if not sooner.

It should work pretty seamless if operating properly. Yours appears to be working correctly if you don't notice it.

There is usually a brief message that will display "cleaning exhaust filter" then disappear.
