Gapping

Hello, I put in new autolite 45 spark plugs and the parts jockey told me to gap them .044... The disgusting old plugs were gapped at .038. I put the .044 gap in, and it runs fine, but what actual gap do you guys recommend?

Thank you

My 70-75 Chilton's lists .034 as the gap for a 240-300. That parts guru must have been thinking about electronic ignition when stating the gap needed to be .044. As the plug ages, the gap opens up leading to a loss of performance.
