Flasher help needed - not the raincoat type

Being electrically challenged as I am can anyone tell me why the lights work, the parking lights work, the driving lights work and the 4 way emergency flashers work but the darn directional signals go on and stay on -- do not flash at all.
Any easily understood help will be greatly appreciated but please remember I am an electrical dummy !!! Thanks

Do you have the proper 6 volt or 12 volt flasher wired into it?

Here's a diagram of how a basic brake/turn signal circuit works. Doc might be on to something. The flasher works on a thermal switch the six volt system, if that is what you have, might not be able to overcome the resistance in the thermal switch with one or two bulbs, but will heat up with all four bulbs:

Is it possible I have the wires backwards- I ask as I don't know if it makes a difference or if one wire is parking and one is directional? If so when I put the emergency flashers on I'm using the parking light and not the directional filament in the light. Could I have a ground somewhere other than at the lights maybe up at the column ? Thanks

Electrical are hard to chase and find. The best to do is to slowly follow the wires to make sure the.circuits.are wired correctly. Many times it's grounding issue. Maybe when you activate the four ways the system is enough ground through all of components to make everything work. Also, check bulbs to make they lighting. It's really hard to diagnose without being there in person.

Try swapping the emergency lights "silver flasher" with the turn signal "silver flasher". They are the same and maybe the turn signal one is stuck on.

Yes there is a difference. The directional filament, also the brake filament and emergency flasher filament, is brighter than the park light filament.
At the bulb socket you should have 3 wires, one for the parking lights, one for the turn signal/emergency flashers/brake lights and one ground.

What year type is the fuse box? It may be on the rear of it, or it may be near it in a wire harness on its own connector, I have even seen them in the glove box or even behind the glove box.

This is from my manual for a 91 Mustang. It sounds like it may be one of the style that is on the rear of the fuse panel.

The Turn signal Flasher is located:
Front seating area, driver side, under dash, driver side of pedal support bracket, mounted in fuse panel

The Hazard Flasher is located:
Front seating area, driver side, under dash, driver side of pedal support bracket, mounted in fuse panel

Another thought, maybe the one in the picture is the turn signal one. Turn on the flashers and see if you can feel the one in the picture clicking. If it clicks to the lights that is the emergency flasher. If not it is the turn signal flasher.
