1990 f250 5.8L V8 Not Firing Up!
Alright, starting my own thread for this one.
So, I bought a 1990 F-250 XL with a 5.8L V8 that runs both gas and propane. The propane is missing a tank, which I happen to be looking for if anybody in my area happens to have one..
So the problem is this: I just put it on the road a couple of days ago, and noticed that when I mash on the gas, I don't really have a whole lot of get up and go, thinking that being an older truck, it's to be expected. However, day before last, I drove it down to the campground that I am caretaker of and was only able to max out at 80KMH with a 1978 Boler trailer on the back. Not that I need to go any faster than that with the trailer on, but when I mashed the gas my top speed was 80KMH. As I was pulling into the campground, the truck stalled out on a 3% downhill grade. I put it into neutral and fired it back up only to have it stall out again about 500 yards down the road. Again, I put it in neutral and it fired up only to stall out again and not fire up since then.
I have already replaced the fuel filter, which it turns out didn't need to be replaced. The fuel pumps do whine when I attempt to fire the truck up so I don't think it's that. At least I hope not as it is stuck about an hour out in the bush. What I am wondering, is if anybody has any other ideas as to what the issue may be?
I am taking a brand new battery down tonight as the one that came with the truck is older and my last truck died right after I bought a new battery. And I am probably going to pull the plugs and see if that is the issue, but if that fails, anybody have any other ideas?

My mom neglected basic maintenance on her truck for years. I came home one December, and had the joyous holiday job of getting her truck running in cold MN winter weather. Fuel filter was nearly plugged, changed that, still no start. Air filter was obsolutely filthy, changed that, no start. Checked the coil for spark, that was good. Changed cap, rotor, plug wires, started. Changed plugs when I got in the warm shop, actually ran well. Drained the 2.5 qts of oil that were left in it (!!c'mon) and did an oil/filter change. That was probably four years ago, I doubt anything but oil changes have been done since. Point being, it could just need some basics.

yup ... some basic maintenance may do it for you.
my 89 was running poorly, missing all over the place, poor gas mileage, poor power. i was all in a dither thinking about TPS, CTS, ECU and a few other 3-letter words.
changed cap and rotor, checked plugs and wires ... runs like a top now.
if basic maintencance doesn't cure it, then you definitely want to pull the codes before throwing money around.

Alright, so spent the weekend out in the bush messing with this truck and have come to the conclusion that I'm going to hook the propane back up. It came with propane but the previous owner took the tank out of the box and was running on just gas.
From what I have gathered, between myself and a few mechanically inclined buddies, the fuel pump is shot and a real pain in the butt to replace.
So, question is this: Does anybody know how to install a tank in there again?

So... I broke down and did the ride of shame, got it towed into town! After a week and only $300.00 for the hours and a bit of labor done, it turns out the fuel pump relay was acting up.
So, my mech jurry-rigged it for now and once the camping season is done we are looking at redoing the wiring in this beast. Basically, having been a farm truck since 1990 and passed through god only knows how many different farmers who are too cheap to take it in and get things fixed properly, I am the proud owner of a unknown amount of wiring jobs to come.
Oh well, I paid $500.00 for it in the first place and now that it is running, it's actually doing pretty good. Except for the new noise coming from under the box. Wife thought it was a air horn but not as loud. Only does it when I am crawling down trails and goes away when I hit the gas.
Any ideas?
