I've had my Uni a couple months now and it runs pretty good (driving it several times a week) and has almost all the original stuff except the tailgate (the wheels are not original but that's ok as far as I'm concerned since they will be replaced anyhow). Looking all over it appears the remanufactured ones are about all that are available. Anyone know of used ones for less than about $400?

Thanks. I had looked all over the internet and called a couple junk yards but no luck. Looks like Dennis Carpenter might be the best route. I'm in North Carolina and they're in driving range if I decide to do that. Thanks for the post again.

 

In 2004, the Studebaker Driver's Club 3 day show and swap meet was held in Charlotte. After it ended, I drove up to Carpenter's place in Concord planning to buy some hood letters for a '63 Galaxie.

When I walked in the door, saw multiple glass showcases cases full of "goodies" .. NOS parts and accessories. Several hours later, there were less goodies, cuz I spent 3 grand buying some of them.

 

I know the feeling and hope it doesn't happen to me. This is my first venture into older automotive stuff and hope I don't get as deep into it as with the boat. I just completed restoration of a 1987 Bayliner sedan flybridge, 460 cu in engine that's impossible to find parts for. That was a neat project especially learning how to upholster... which I did myself to the entire salon and berths... but some of the stuff was really expensive like teak at $27 a board foot..... hoping Uni is not like that.

 

A boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into. I once owned a 37' foot Chris with two Cheebie engines.

I had to replace both of them just after I bought it, as the previous owned had 'doctored' them to hid the sins.

These trucks are money pits, same thing can occur as the boat, except there no water to pour money into.

In the late 1970's, I attended a boatyard auction in San Pedro CA. The owner had died, his wife and kids had no interest. The ad in the LA Times included 'two used engines and 2 crates of used parts.'

When I got there, the two 'used engines' were brand new 427 long blocks, the 'used parts in the crates' were new 427 parts. I bought the whole shebang for a grand!
