I just picked up my first truck ever yesterday, a 2012 F250 crew 4x4 with the 6.2L gas engine. It seems to me, when the engine is cold, that it raps or knocks for a second or two immediately after startup...is this characteristic? The truck is a 'new-leftover' model with about 28 miles on it so far. When warm, or even semi-warm, the engine starts right up and sounds like a healthy american V8. Any thoughts?
The injectors are a bit noisy on the 6.2, however that noise is always there at idle. If you're hearing a noise that goes away after a few seconds, I'd take it in to find out what it is.
my 5.4L I just sold was like that as well, don't know exactly what it was, but do not think that it was anythign to worry about, did that ever since I had it at 5k miles, was still doing it last week at 66k.
Ive noticed every once in awhile mine will do that also. Not very often but only for a split second then everything is fine. When I really notice it is if Im parked on a incline. If I back up the incline and restart it doesnt do it. Wonder if it has something to do with the oil in the pan and where the pump is located?
my 5.4 did it when i bought it at 100k ... ran synthetic for 50k or so miles....and it still did it...switched to motorcraft syn blend cause it is half the price and it still does it..but it still runs great at 250k ...so i dont think it hurts too much

My 6.2 does that on occasion, esp. in the am. I would not lose any sleep over it.
My Nissan Titan I had did the same thing for 7 years and 122,000 miles and I have heard it on my 6.2 once in 2000 miles. On the Titan the cam chain tensioners used oil pressure for tension and the lifters also use oil for tension. I would bet similar items on this engine.
OK, I won't worry about it. Mine only seems to do it 'sometimes' after setting for awhile. The engine's covered for 60k miles, so if nothing changes between now and then, it will probably be fine for the life of the vehicle.

Sounds like the drain-back valve in the oil filter, see how it acts when you change it and use a MotorCraft one.
