2009+ specifically 2011+ Resale values?

I'm debating on whether I want to wait for the "all new" F-150 to come out, in which case it would be a few years beyond the initial launch as (Ford has a history of early year bugs to work out) or they dilute the first year runs with weak power plants, packages and lack of options. Remember how ticked off 2010 Mustang owners were when Ford put the 5.0 in the car during the 2011 model year, or vise versa with the F-series in 2009 getting the more powerful and wider range in 2011+

Option 2 would be to get one of the last of the current gen trucks next year (Likely 2014) Quite frankly I love my 2011 F-150 5.0L, it's been the best truck I've owned to date and I'm not happy with what GM did with their new truck, or how Toyota missed the mark to really do something with the Tundra and opted to not. The Ram while is in my opinion still the best looking, there is something that is always just half-backed about them (I owned an '05 Ram 2500, Cummins so I feel qualified to speak about them)

That said I'm wondering what kind of trade-in money some of you guys are seeing on your 2009+ but specifically 2011-onward. Some of you have traded 5.0L's for an EcoBoost and some of you have gone EcoBoost back to the V8. Some of you may have just sold your 2009+ outright for something else entirely. What kind of money in the real world are you getting for your 2-4 year old trucks?

Just skimming through the usual online private party sites and commercial listing sites, like Autotrader & Cars.com it appears those sites are littered with 2-5 year old F-series trucks and the values seem super low. Example, my 2011 F-150 in mint shape, 24K miles YTD MSRP'd for $36K new. I paid $26K OTD after rebates, BS, taxes & lic. I've seen the exact same truck listed used for $18K ish which means the dealer probably gave the guy $12-14K max on trade.

I would basically like to trade up to a 4x4, Screw, short box, 4x4, EcoBoost, 3.73 tow pkg (Max tow not necessary) cloth, XLT, SYNC. The productivity stuff like I have now would be great but would not be a must. Would like to purchase early or just before the 2015 truck comes out next year, but I'm afraid my 2011 will have dropped way to low in resale to comfortably do it.

I guess there is both good & bad to driving the best selling vehicle in the US, the problem is the more of them out there, the lower the resale will be as the market just gets flooded with F-150's on the used market.

As much as I don't like Toyota, I miss the killer resale I would get after selling or trading them in. For awhile I would buy a Tacoma new, keep it for 4-5 years and trade out of it losing barely $1K of my original purchase price, even with higher miles on them. A friend of mine just traded out of his beat to snot literally, 2007 Tundra for a brand new 2013 Tundra. The dealer gave him $18K for his 2007 Tundra SR5, with 160K miles that otherwise looked like it had been to hell & back. He used it daily working on oil fields and hunting on the weekends, and claims he got a smoking deal on his 2013 Tundra on top of all that. Not saying I like those, because I don't just using it as an example.

In January 2012, the dealer gave me 16000 for an 06 supercab flareside with 46000 miles and worn out tires, was an fx4, I think your estimates are a little on the low side. this trade went towards 2012 supercab fx4 with maxtow, got a very good deal when all was said and done!

I think the estimates here a re little low as well.

I think the best deals on this gen of trucks will be at the end of the 2014 MY when the 2015's are beginning to show up on the lots or when the order bank opens.

However, the next gen of ecoboost is supposedly coming in the 2015 trucks. It's supposed to be more powerful and more fuel efficient.

Also keeping in ind that Ford and GM are jointly developing new 9 and 10 speed transmissions for the light SUV's, crossovers, F-150's and Expy's as well as GM's matching line of vehicles. There's no way this will be ready by the 2015 launch so that means that there will some ticked off next generation truck buyers who will miss out on the new transmission if they buy too early.

My point is this, these trucks are ever evolving, getting better in some ways and worse in others. Just buy a truck when it feels right and don't look back.

I think the prices for used might be a little on the low side as well, poolrunner. Most used vehicle prices have been higher in the last few years due to the manufacturers leasing fewer vehicles and the Cash-for Clunckers program of a few years ago to stimulate new vehicle sales when the bottom dropped out of the economy in '09. That took a lot of vehicles off of the used market which in turn artificially created a shortage of supply which in turn increased prices. I paid $19K for my used 06 XLT EC 4x4 in 08 (a lease return)and still see similar 06 models with under 60K miles bringing $14-$16K over 5 years later. Now a 2 year old F150 similar to mine is going for the $24-$25K range asking price with the Screws bringing close to $30K asking price used. Don't know if this trend will continue, though. Ford and their competitors are again pushing leases so there may be a larger supply of good used 2-3 year old pickups on the market in the future pushing prices downward somewhat. Either way it's a gamble, so if you think you may want a new or newer truck do it whenever you want. I wouldn't let prices or supply infleunce when I buy. I only let prices influence when I sell. If the prices come down on used, drive it longer. I would still be driving my 05 SD 6.0L if the engine would have been as good as the 7.3L's were.
