Ecoboost Shake - Brand New FX4

I've waited years to buy the truck of my dreams. I just purchased a new loaded 2013 FX4 with Ecoboost after hearing good things about the engine. I noticed at low RPMs I'd feel the truck shaking like it was wanting to stall out or puttering. I took it to the dealership and a couple of things made me suspicious. It was reported that the service manager drove my truck in addition to a tech and they left me no Service Work Order. They told me that the truck had an adaptive transmission and the tires may be hard from sitting on the lot and sent me on my way. They said to give it more time to break in.

I started to Google the problem and now I'm nervous wondering if I have a defective Ecoboost. Can anyone make a recommendations on what to try next? Does the problem get progressively worse? You spend this much on a truck you really don't want it feeling like its about to backfire.

Welcome!

How many miles are on the truck? Did it run perfectly normal during your test drive or have you had it for a while?

Has the check engine light come?

Don't let the internet scare you. No matter which engine, which truck which maker, there will be an issue that will be posted online.

The engine will take between 7500 and 10,000 miles to break in fully. The transmission is adaptive to your driving styles and does learn your driving habits.

The six speeds on these trucks are kind of quirky feeling but they are strong and reliable.

Keep us posted.

Thank you! It only has a couple hundred miles on it. The check engine light does not come on. We didn't pick up on it during the test drive. I'm not sure I would have noticed, nor do I think I was really focused on the engine at this speed, as I was probably playing with dashboard or accelerating. It's most noticeable when you are coasting through a neighborhood going like 15 mph or my wife said she noticed it when coasted over some railroad tracks last night. Maybe it needs time to break-in. I hope. I wouldn't call it severe, but just rough. We are going to take it to our mechanic that works on our other vehicles and see what he thinks and whether it all looks/sounds normal.

We are also thinking about taking another user's advice, turn off overdrive and get an oil change it before a road-trip and get another oil change when we get back.

If it is at really low speeds it could be the tranny trying to hold the gear before down shifting. put your tow/haul on and see if it still does it. the tranny will shift better with miles as it is adaptive to your driving.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here.

Thanks for the comments. I took it to my mechanic and he thought it was a transmission issue and insisted that I return it. We worked it out with the dealer and we traded it for another FX4. Interesting enough, I was lucky if I got 11 mpg on the other FX4. Yesterday on the way home from work I got over 15 with the new one.

Got the bed cover and liner put in this week and I'll be getting new wheels and tires on it in a couple of weeks. I'm really enjoying this truck.

That's really cool the dealer let you trade for another. I'm surprised by that one. Hope you love your truck.
