Planning a swap to manual transmission. Suggestions?

Okay I have a 90 F-150 302 with an aod tranny right now. Planning on when the tranny goes to swap to a manual. Always wanted one but couldnt find a truck at the time. Was wondering suggestions on best tranny to use and so on. I understand I'll have to swap column. Install clutch, punch out floor for stick shift and maybe a crossmember swap. Plus other small things. If anyones got a link to a forum where someone did on my model truck I'd appreciate it! I like a challenge haha. Was originally planning to swap from 2x4 to 4x4 and manual but I have been fine this past winter even with a few bad storms. Also 3.73 rear end I believe.

You will need the pedal assembly, transmission, flywheel, clutch assembly, driveshaft, and tranny tunnel cover.

Here's a pic somebody sent me long ago when I was doing mine. This shows everything you need to make the swap. Be advised this pic is for a 4x4.

Thanks garthneddy and jas88. So the pedal assembly is e-brake and clutch? You cant just do the clutch? Also will be looking out for a donor truck but was wondering what transmission is the best? Also is 80-96 compatible or just 87-91? Thanks again for any input!

You need the entire pedal assembly, as it is one unit. I would consider the best transmission to use the ZF5, which is an overdrive transmission used in 3/4 ton and bigger trucks. I'm not sure what year they began installing them from the factory, but its the only aluminum transmission available in the 3/4 ton and bigger trucks.

There isn't any issues or alterations using it with a 302 in a half ton?

No issues as long as you get a transmission with the SBF bellhousing bolt pattern.

So the pedal assembly is e-brake and clutch?
The emergency brake has nothing to do with this. The pedal assy. is brake and clutch integrated so, no, you cannot "just do the clutch".

The ZF5 trans would be best if you can find one but the Mazda is much more common. The ZF5 and M5OD were both used starting in 1988.

Gotcha Alright thanks Jas88 couldn't tell from the pic if it was attached to the brake or e-brake pedal. I'll keep my eyes open and hopefully I'll find a nice donor with one of these trannys! Thanks a lot guys!

Don't settle for the M5OD. The ZF transmission is superior and just as common, as it came in 3/4 ton and larger trucks as the only manual transmission choice after 1987 (for the most part anyway, I have seen a handful of M5OD trannies in 3/4 tons but they were all light duty). Make sure that you get one for a small block though, as the bellhousing does not separate like garthneddy said.

If you think you want to do 4x4 later, install a 4x4 ZF5 with transfer case and be done with that part of it. Price increase should be negligible considering the time savings in the long run. Plus you'll have low range to use for things like pulling boats out of the water.

With the zf5 with the transfer case it comes with a low gear that the 2x4 version doesn't?

4x4 and 2x4 trans gear ratios (I think) are the same. But the transfer case will have high (1:1) and low (~2.6:1?) gears. So putting the t.case in low range gives you another whole set of gears, too low for normal driving but great for backing trailers, pulling out bushes, etc.

That's awesome. I'm sold. I'm planning for closer to the end of summer so I have a few months to find a nice donor. Thanks for all the advice!

you will need to change the flywheel and spacer plate on the 5.0 if you use the ZF5 trans- that trans was used on the 4.9 and 5.8 which both used the 164 tooth flywheel, the 5.0 uses the 157 tooth flywheel. You WILL need to use a 164 tooth flywheel that has the proper balance for the 5.0 otherwise the starter will never engage the flywheel properly.
