When did Ford begin to put computer controls on truck engines? I don't think I had any on my 1980 I had back in the day, but I know the 83 Ranger I had next did.

 

1983 was the first year, I believe. That was on select Californian models, if I remember right. This was a feedback carburetor.

Feedback carbs were also on the 84 to 86 models with 1 and 2 bbl carburetors, with fuel injection being an option on 1985 302's, and I think it was still an option (not standard) on 1986 302's as well.

Factory models from 1984 to 1987 with 4bbl carburetors (351W H.O.'s and 460's) had Duraspark II. 1980 to 1983 non-Californian models had DSII ignition as well.

It came in slowly. Some models had a oddball timing control system, which used a regular carb I believe, but had more control over the timing. So if you consider that computer control, it may have happened earlier than 83.

 

I seem to remember Ralph saying 1980 or 81 for California but I could be wrong....
