From Feds Probe 340,000 Ford F-250, F-350 Super Duty Trucks for Steering Problem | Edmunds.com
WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into an estimated 340,000 2008 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks after complaints of loss of steering capability.
Ford is cooperating with federal safety regulators in the probe, said Kelli Felker, a Ford spokeswoman, in response to a query from Edmunds.
The trucks have not been recalled at this point, although such an investigation can sometimes lead to a recall.
"Complainants allege an internal failure of the steering gear box results in a loss of steering capability," said NHTSA in its description of the problem.
Federal safety regulators say they have received five complaints alleging an internal failure of the steering gear box resulting in a complete loss of steering control in 2008 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks.
"One complainant alleges the loss of steering resulted in the vehicle crashing into a parked vehicle," said NHTSA in a posting on its Web site. "A second complaint alleges failure of the steering gear box resulted in a roadway departure at 35 mph."
A preliminary evaluation has been opened to gather information to assess whether the vehicles contain a safety-related defect.

Thank-you for your replies. This is interesting as we have a 2008 F250 Superduty. We will see how this plays out. We have a truck camper (Hallmark pop up) so this would be an additional factor with the weight. The previous owner had a towing package installed so brakes, suspension, etc. have been upgraded.

This has always worried me; whenever my wife drives my trucks...
She likes them, says they handle well, but I worry if the power steering goes somehow, and a flat tire.
Or maybe she hits debris in the road, which causes a spike in steering fluid, ruptures, loses power steering, and meanwhile the tire is flat, tugging the truck off the road.
I know she can handle the truck, but what about without power steering and brakes?
Ther'd be fake nails flying everywhere, and I bet she'd freak out and end up rolling it.
