rear end / axle play

When looking at my drum brakes I noticed the drivers rear wheel has 1/4 to 1/2" inward / outward play. Passenger side is solid.

Is this normal, and what do I look for?

Thanks!

I would measure it and see what the endshake actually is. You should have 1/16 to 1/8 inch endshake. The axle is held in with a snap ring in a groove. If the outboard bearing fails you wll normally get some up and down movement. Normall in -out movement is normal.
