Question about rear axle assemblies

I have a 1984 F-350 crew cab long bed. It has single tires on the rear, not duallies. It has an automatic and a 460 with carburetor, not fuel injection.

The rear end is making noise and I have been told I need to replace it. I haven't been able to find a single tire rear end from a 1984 F-350 in any wrecking yards.

What years are interchangeable with the 1984?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

You can probably use one of the later rear ends, Ford introduced the Sterling 10.25" in 1985. The SRW F-250 full floating and the SRW F-350 should work.

Be careful, the snouts on the rearends may be different lengths and may require a different driveshaft length. But if it would fit, I would get a later Ford/Sterling rearend. They started using them in the late 80's and got away from the Dana. The reason I do not like the Dana is brake work; you have to take the whole thing apart to work on the brakes. The Ford/Sterling brake drum comes right off with no dis-assembly.

Starting sometime in 93 or so, they upgraded the Ford/Sterling with a longer snout to help prevent the splines from wearing on the pinion. If you didn't mind cutting your driveshaft a little bit(or if you have to cut it anyway), you might want to look at one of those.

And don't forget the f250's. They used the same rearends as the f350's(unless they were the lightduty non-floating type). The f350's only had heavier springs in the rear.

The Dana rearend will have a fill plug in the back cover. The Ford/Sterling(some people call it the 10.25) will have a plain smooth cover in the back, it's fill plug is on the front driver's side of the pumpkin.

Dave, good point, I forgot about the pinion and yoke change in 93. I have a 93 or newer housing in mine, but used the innards from a 90 F-250 rear. He should be able to use any 1985-92 SRW full floating rear with no problems.

Thank you very much for the information, gentlemen. Hopefully, it will help in my search for a new rear axle.

Good luck with it. Most junk yards aren't conversant enough with these things, if it ain't in Hollander, it won't work is there attitude. I got told that a set of later rear doors wouldn't fit my 86. The guy that actually owns the whole place (wrecker service, repair shop and junk yard) said, we do door swaps all the time for work trucks, all they want is it to open and close and the window to work. That's why I have a 1990 left front, somewhere between a 1987 and 1991 right front and 1996 rear doors on mine.

No such thing as SRW only axle, rear axle same with SRW's or DRW's. What makes the difference is the wheels, hubs and drums.

1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog ~ Rear Axle Application Chart: Do you see a specific to SRW or DRW rear axle listed? I don't either.

And, now you can see what years the rear axle will interchange. Your F350 probably has a Dana 70.

Bill, I hate to bust on you, but I thought the same till I actually had a 1990 SRW and a 1993 DRW 10.25" sitting on the rear frame of my truck. The one furthest away is the DRW, you can see the difference in length from the spring seat to the backing plate. The spring seats were the same width on the 86 DRW, 90 SRW and 93 DRW.

No 1980/89 parts catalog ref for a SRW or DRW only axle. I didn't look at 1990 or later.

Sterling rear hub is deeper/wider than Dana, so the Dana hubcaps/wheel covers won't fit.

Bill, the width of my 86 exactly matched the width of the 93. The 93 housing with the 90 innards (it was a limited slip 3.55) is under my truck right now.
