Can a taller air filter affect performance

Probably sounds life a dumb question. But as the title says, can a taller air filter affect performance? I have a 460, performance 460 intake, 650cfm Holley double pumper with a 4" tall air filter. Should I go down a size? What would you do? How tall air filter do you run?

An internal combustion engine at its very core is nothing but a big air pump, more air in more air out, at least to a point.

So it would stand to reason air filter size would have an effect on performance, I don't have any data to back that up, just applying common sense, i'm pretty sure there's a point of diminishing returns, what that point is I don't know, but I would think a 14x4 element would be more than adequate.

20 yrs ago I used to run two 3 inch tall air filters stacked together .I would use silicone rubber between the 2 filters to keep from sucking dirt in between filters .By running 2 stacked air filters on a 750 holly on a built up 351 m it really seemed to run better .I have no test data but I did notice that the engine seemed to run better.Just my experience from the old days.

Alright, thanks guys.
I also read that the height should be 1/4 the diameter of the filter so I'm going to stay with the 4"

i know when i bought my hiboy with a 390 it had the tiny triangle edelbrock cleaner. i put a chrome cleaner on it from napa with a 14 by 3 filter, i can feel and hear the difference. so yes i say it makes more power.

Was it the air filter or the straight up timing set you installed?
