2001 f250 v10 tranny problem

Hey yall. My buddy brought me his 01 f250 it wont shift out of 1st then if it does it slams into second then the rest of the gears are fine. This was after he over heated the tranny last sunday in the mud while he was at work. He was low on fluid so i had him add some. I shift manually thru the gears it seems to work could this be a vacumm or a clugged filter

I am thinking a big NO, if he was low on fluid AND overheated. Not good!

Post manual automatic

I would drop the filter after running a flush mix thru it then change filter
hopefully this gets the torque converter too ( drain plug?)
If it doesn't work then your out the cost of clean fluid a filter and less time than it takes to change the trans!

Fresh fluid can't fix damage that's been done. I agree with the consensus above, he likely needs a rebuild.

It won't work. It's just a waste of time and money. This one is finished.

well i have drivin it for a week when its cold it shifts kinda soft like normal but doesnt wanna come out of 1st. then when its warm about 10 miles it flashed and shifts kinda hard and makes a high pitched squealing noise. I am going to hook my new scan tool up what codes might pop up? i know the incorrect gear ratio code means new tranny lol but would there be a code for a clogged filter. he may have some water or something in it i may drain it and test.

A clogged filter won't set a code. If you have a clogged filter the transmission is toast. A gear ratio code does not necessarily mean a new transmission.

Here are some of the codes that may come up:

P0701 Transmission Control System Range/Performance
P0702 Transmission Control System Electrical
P0703 Torque Converter/Brake Switch B Circuit Malfunction

The path most taken doesn't always lead to the proper destination...

I'm no engineer, mechanic or smart...... Just LUCKY though blind!

Do the preliminary stuff first.... Code would be nice........ If the truck will shift MANUALLY and isn't slamming gears then you MIGHT get LUCKY....

Peace!
