Has anyone rebuilt their own ZF?
Hey, my tranny has seen its better days my neighbor bought the truck new in '97 for his cattle and fencing business it was used to tow a 30ft lower boy goose neck trailer daily I bought it with approximatly 265k miles on it and now it has 279k miles on it the synchronizers are going and I'm grinding gears two diesel shop quoted me at $2500 to rebuild it I payed that for the truck with a plow so I don't what to put that in just the tranny. I found this rebuild kit on autozone.com Manual Transmission Rebuild Kit | 1997 Ford F350 1 ton P/U 4WD 8 Cylinders F 7.3L Turbo Diesel | AutoZone.com Has anyone else used it, is it all quality parts and is the company a good one I never heard of them? Does anyone else have a rebuild kit and is it easy to rebuild one?

Here is one with a few tips, but the pics are from another thread. I can't find that one yet.

"Has anyone rebuilt their own ZF?"
-Yes. ;)
But I have a complete '91 Ford Truck Shop Manual set, that's what I used
plus the information a guy in town told me over the phone ...which I've
posted here on FTE. :) I hardly ever start new threads and true in this
case too, the information is in someone else's ZF rebuild thread.
There's a mistake in the ZF42-Manual and it got copied into Ford's books
and has-never-been corrected anywhere I've ever seen. :/
Step 13 of the assembly procedure has the wrong picture. It sent me to
running around like a chicken with my head cut off for about a half hour.
LOL :)
{edit: Cool URL there, ReBilld ! :}
{looks like the ZF47 Manual doesn't have the same mistake as the ZF42 xD}
LOL :)
You sure you're up to this? :/
{edit: *ZF* is all I used to find this thread, maybe _*ZF* rebuild_?}
Fill out your information.

This is where I got all my parts to rebuild mine. Cost around 500 for parts.

...stirring in the other direction: is there such thing as a 'good auto trans?'
also - that Midwest trans part site is awesome. I had been looking for something like that while back, but gave up. ...somewhere that actually lists prices for all the internal parts.
I have a complete ZF5-42 4x4 that I bought in parts for $50. the rear tail-housing was broken completely off and the guy just handed me a 5 gallon bucket full of parts. I just needed the shifter, and boots, but I couldn't turn down all the spare parts. its nice to know that I can get a replacement tailhousing from this place for ~$200 and put it all back together if I ever need/want/find-time-to.
