Gvwr dictated axle code and the 1 ton designation was simply a way increase the advertised capacity without changing anything. It was entirely possible to option a 250 so that the rated capacity is higher than a poorly optioned 350.

That is not true. Both 250 and 350s were available with d44hds and d60s. The gvwr dictated axle size but the front springs remained the same

hmmmm, did not know about d44's in 79 f350's. looked at one years ago and just figured someone had swiped the 60 and replaced it with a d44 to try and scam a dummy.
