New Guy - Gotchyas on 2004 F250?

Just signed up after running through the site on my other ford, a flat bed F500.

Looking to pick up another Ford, this time an F250 of the 2004 variety. First Ford truck in that size and have heard about some issues with those diesels and the heads (is that right)?

Its a King Ranch, 4x4 diesel. Right in my price range, about 15-20K, low miles yadda yadda. What should I be looking for? What are some known issues?

I'm a farmer, and the truck will get used quite a bit, but at the same time, taken care of mechanically. I just wanted to know what I need to keep a special eye on.

Thanks everyone!

Well, damn. Read a metric **** ton of information last night and today on this engine. Short story- I'm not worried about it. Still a great engine.

Long story... There's a lot of consideration to be taken when culling the lemons out. I want a 2004-2008 King Ranch F250 but I'm not paying 60K for a new one.

Akaik, the EGR's need replacing, head bolts need to be replaced with AGR head studs, oil cooler needs to be replaced with a bypass remote mounted filter (right?) and new head gaskets. This will essentially eliminate all of the 6.0's perceived issues, right? What does all this cost total? Bout 5k installed?

I'm not into overboosting or putting a chip/any performance upgrades on my truck- nor buyin one with them. Same with lifts, big tires or continuously towing heavy jobs around.

I just want a stock truck I can throw shovels and the occasional fertilizer bubble into the truck bed. Every now and then towing a tractor.

Will I have these problems? Has anyone negotiated with the dealer to pay their list price so long as all the preventative maintenance is done?

What's a good price for a 2004-08 4d, sb 4x4 f250 powerstroke king ranch?

Learning a lot here. Thanks guys.

You don't need any of it until you actually have problems. People get into this mindset of "if I a, b, and c, THEN it'll be ok". You won't know what parts, if any at all, it needs until you actually start using the truck. If you want to build $5k into the purchase price and knock it out right away, go for it, but there's a real chance that some of that is money pissed away because you perceive that you might have a problem in the future that would never actually occur.

And when you do start having issues and actually need to do the work, you very certainly DON'T need all the bling components, for the majority of repairs the stock replacements are all that you'd need, assuming the repair is completed correctly About the only two exceptions are the beefier EGR coolers and the head studs instead of bolts. Sure the BPD oil cooler looks snazzy, but unless it starts ****ting gold Hershey's kisses out the tail pipe it's not TEN times the cost of an OEM unit snazzy. You could pay for a complete top end job on what you save going with a stock unit over the BPD oil cooler fanciness.

I would spend my money on some sort of gauges, Scanguauge 2, Dash boss, or other. Gauge will let you know if there is a problem, before it gets costly.

So long as it passes preliminary inspections and a engine huge monitoring setup is installed, I would be alright?

I know Kelly BB has suggestions on price but what would you guys think is a solid price for a 2004/05/06/07 f250 crew cab 4x4 king ranch?

With the Diesel you should skip the F250 and go with the F350 for the added
usable capacity. That diesel engine is heavy. My 06 F350 comes in at over
4,000 for the front end. The differences in the two trucks is not that much
for the added weight capacity.
Also come on over to 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
and ask what needs to be done to bullet proof the engine. If your numbers are
in line then there are things that you don't have to do. The remote oil cooler
IMHO is a joke. The big stuff really comes down to your basic maintenance habits
Like let the coolant go too long and that is what starts the cooler problems most
of the time. Run with batteries that are going bad and your risk the FICM
and the injectors. It's all about the maintenance that has been done and is being done.
Start out with good numbers and keep up on the maintenance and you should see a
long life. When I went looking for a diesel over a year ago I went in knowing the needs.
So like I said come on over to the 6.0 Forum and chat.

I am a happy 6.0 owner.
