Before performance or style I would pick reliability. Once everything is mechanically sound then I would address anything in the body that could get damaged by rust. But a exhaust isn't too expensive and will yield great performance gains. If yours by any chance is an auto with an E4OD I would do some mods to make it last longer (Cooler and Shift Kit), $100 worth of parts should be enough to hold back that $2500 rebuild a couple of years.

You need to start with making sure you have a strong platform to build on. Spend a little now like Encho said...trans shift kit...maybe a deeper trans pan and trans cooler. Make sure your engine is sound....good tune up...quality parts. Service your diffs. Then start making small changes at first. Cold air intake....maybe exhaust. Wheels and tires. Grill guards....window tint....the list is endless.
Remember, making cosmetic changes are fruitless if your rig is broke down in the driveway because you have neglected something mechanically!! Have a plan and have fun!!

Do you have an electrick O/D lockout button in the lever? then you have an E4OD. you could also get under the truck and count pan bolts, the E4OD has 20, the rest have fewer.

Check the link in my signature regarding E4OD mods. I'm sure you'll find that info useful.

I recently replaced all of the vacuum hoses, PCV valve and DPFE sensor on my emissions system with quality silicone hoses and OEM parts with great results.
