Odd rear axle on 2004
Hello,
I just replaced the outer bearings and seals on my rear axle (2004 4.6l). Anyway the rear axle cover has 10 bolts and a tag with 88 on it. Both of those suggest an 8.8" axle. Also If you look at pictures of 8.8" and 9.75" axles, mine looks exactly like an 8.8.
I got bearings and seals for an 8.8 and they were too small. I pulled the bearings and seals and brought them to the parts store. It turns out the I needed bearings from a 9.75.
Any thoughts as to what the deal is? I bought the truck with 100k many years ago. FWIW, I have 6 bolt hubs with and the axle shaft at the bearing is 1.7XX" I probably should have counted splines when it wsa apart, but didn't
good luck -jim
