Propel Biodiesel... anyone using it?

my cheap diesel station a block from my house ($3.65 /gal, today)
just started selling E85 flex fuel, and may bring along biodiesel
if it is warranted by sales prospects...

is anyone running their flavor of kool aid?

what about seals, as in viton, etc?
believe the feedstock is WVO... so it probably smells, around
here, like popcorn shrimp or something...

i'll look long and hard before filling up with it... especially since
the flyer they gave me says it's SO CLEAN it will wash all the nasty
petro sludge out of the tank, and clog your fuel filter, so have a
spare one handy, and change them every 10,000 miles.

straight WVO biodiesel does run pretty good, if it's done right.
friend of mine made his own, and ran 100k of it thru a 6.0....

I've ran Blue-Sun B20 and SunCor B20 for well over 100,000 miles in my 2005. Loved the stuff, quieter, smoother and slightly more MPG.

I haven't used Bio too much in my 2006.

Is that more the homebrew stuff versus commercially available biodiesel?

Some places in the mid-west only sell some form of Bio, either B5-B20.

In 2006 John Deere would try to deny warranty claims if Biodiesel was used, but could never back it up and dropped it, bt of course threw in the "Only BioDiesel to 5% is approved"

Blah blah

Just wanted to add that I have heard the warning about fuel filters, but have never seen a need for it in the "real" world.

Yep, it's commercially available similar to E85 gasoline. Somewhat a boutique fuel in some parts and state sanctioned in others (Minnesota has something like B5 or B10 only).

Near me I have a local distributor Team Petroleum that sells Biodiesel and also a Co-Op.

Some use waste animal oil, some waste vegetable oil and some use virgin stock. Blue-Sun uses virgin Soybean oil as their basestock.

I like it, and would use it more, but the cost is too much compared to regular diesel anymore. The 2 Murphy USA stations by me used to have B20 BioDiesel but stopped carrying it about September or October last year.

I've never used to the home brew variety, but know a couple guys that have... then again they are driving an early 80s IDI 6.9 and an older Mercedes. Definately a different ballgame compared to a computer controlled engine with high tolerances.

I haven't ran any calculations lately since I have gotten any Bio sense last Sept/Oct but as it was it basically broke even between the Bio's increased MPG and Price versus regular diesel being cheaper and lower MPG.

When Murphys USA had the Bio it was the same price as regular diesel, so double bonus there.

I see Team Petroleum is at $4.15 for Bio, not sure what they charge for regular diesel at the moment, but it's about $3.60 most places here. You would need about 2+ MPG improvement to break even using BIO over regular diesel.

I feel the normal is about a 1-2 mpg improvement using commercial Bio.

Yep. That's all we have here in IL. Most stations are B11, I've run the stuff for 100k with no ill effects.

the lubrication would be my main reason for running it.
i remembrer reading about 100% biodiesel, and the lubricity
was double anything an additive like diesel kleen produced.

yesterday, i topped off my tank at cheap diesel, and they
had a booth, and were *giving away* $10 worth of E85
to get people to try it... they just converted the station,
and i've yet to see anyone filling from the new kool aid pump.

and there wasn't anyone in there, filling for free, yesterday either.
well, not everyone can run it.... so i asked about biodiesel, and
they said.... "maybe soon, if the E85 sells..." so, it's not looking good.

E85 failed miserably several years ago.

Wink

For anyone interested head over to the Bio Fuels page here on FTE.
Read anything by Fabmandelux he is the guru on that stuff.
I personally have been brewing and burning the stuff for about 6 years now. IDI, 7.3 stroke and my 6.0 all love the stuff. At 100% I do see a reduction in MPG of about 2-3 mpg with the 6.0 less BTU's in the bio compaired to petro fuel but at my projected cost of about 1.00 per gallon for the stuff I brew I dont care. As far as performance I just have to mash the go pedal a bit more when pulling the toy hauler, again not a big issue dont need to push that big thing down the highway any over 70mph anyway. Its not about going for me it's getting it slowed down and stopped!
