Gas Tank Leak...

Howdy again everyone! Thanks for all your previous help. I have a new one for you now.

As I was detailing my cab, I lifted up the carpet behind the passenger side seat and ah ha! Wet with gas; I knew I smelled it. I do have an in cab tank (it goes all the way across if that matters) and I can't see the hole, it might be on the backside, but the tank, only down at the bottom corner, is rusted a bit, kind of white, with one dark rusted circle. To me that seems like a hole.

My question is this, mine is a 1970, what other years can I look for that would have the same size gas tank. I'm assuming my only option is to replace it. Also, if I wanted to move the gas tank to the underside, and I have to replace it, would now be a good time to do that? Anyone know how much I should expect to pay? Thanks!

you need a tank from a 70-72 truck to mount in without mods.
I don't know if 73 and up would work but before 70 they used a different bolt setup.

67-69 used a 3 bolt flange and 70-72 has a 5 bolt flange.

Hey! Thanks! You're always around huh? I'm loving it. I also talked to a local guy who works on older cars and he said it would be about $500 for a new tank and sending unit, which includes install. That sound about right?

He said for about $800 we could relocate it to the bed of the truck (underside I'm assuming) he also said if a gas tank for a 70 wasn't available some folks use a gas tank from a 1970 Ford Mustang.

I don't know much about these trucks, but he seemed to know a fair amount.

Do you think it's safe to drive so long as it's just a pin hole - hole?

no it's not safe to drive, between the possibility of a spark and the fumes you are putting yourself in.
some radiator shops can repair a fuel tank depending on how bad it is.

The 70 mustang tank install is very popular. It relocates it under the back of the bed where some have a spare tire.
Biggest problem with that is the filler neck is in the bed of the truck.
here is a Link

You might want to check around the local wrecking yards to see if you can find a replacement.
Plenty of vendors sell them but they are not cheap when new.
Do some research and decide what will be best for your needs.

Gas fumes are dangerous. Pin hole or not. It will only get worse. In my 2011 www.dennis-carpenter.com catalog he advertises the tank for $300.00 so I guess $500 for the whole thing isn't bad. I have a in-cab tank in my 1971 F100 parts truck I'll sell you cheap but I would investigate a bed tank now. Look back at the threads in this Forum going back 7-10 days. There has been one or two threads on bed tanks. One was out of a 1970 mustang.

Ugh. I'm a tad short to be able to pump fuel into the bed of the truck, though it would be nice for it to not be in the cab. Tough choice.

I'm having a blonde moment (no offense, just the best way to describe it) I took the top off what I assume is the housing for the air filter and there is no air filter inside...I think I must have stared at it for a few minutes in a very confused manner.

That's not my truck, but shouldn't there be an air filter inside the blue bit??

Hey, I'm not sure how to PM you, but how much would you want for the gas tank from the old truck? And where are you located (state) thanks!

Oh $40 or $50 whatever you think is fair. I am in Phoenix Arizona. You can contact me at www.jeffreykurth@chapmanchoice.com with your address so I can get a freight quote from my shipper. As a matter of fact I'm going up to Camp Verde Arizona this weekend. That's where I'm storing the truck. I can grab either the tank or it's dimensions then.

I live in Charleston SC, I have a feeling shipping might be a tad much. 29401 is my zip. If you get a moment, check it out though. Thanks.

If you add your location to your profile, we'd know where you are and if pickup is feasible. I have a '70 tank that needs cleaning that's about to go to scrap.

I asked my shipper to give me a guess-stamite. I guessed 48" x 24" x 6". And 10 pounds. But my shipper said he can't ship from here at my dealership. Since it once had combustable material in it, it is considered "HAZ MAT". He is willing to box it up for me though so I could take it to a local UPS Store. Considering how much it would cost this dealership IF I could ship it, the UPS Store will probably charge me around $40.00. UPS Ground. Once I get up to Camp Verde I'll measure it for certain.
