I let my Brother borrow my truck and...
Yesterday I let my brother borrow my prized F250 to go shooting with a friend and while he was out there he decided to drive through a "puddle", which ended up being a ~4' deep mud hole. He didn't get stuck but he sucked enough water/mud in the intake to kill the MAF, luckily it didn't get into the cylinders. There are two lingering problems (besides the mud in the cab) that I can't figure out and I'm wondering if anyone has an idea.
1). The V10 hesitates when you first give it gas, like it's cutting out and then it goes fine after that, it does not hesitate or miss under higher rpms. This happens more regularly when starting from a stop but I have also noticed it while moving, if the engine is idling when you throttle it up.
2). The 4R100 will not shift above 2nd gear, no codes are being thrown, and there does not appear to be water in the trans fluid (It's also at the right level).
If anyone has any thoughts/ideas I would sure appreciate them!
Thanks!

The hesitation sounds to me like incorrect fueling, which would be caused by a sensor problem such as a bad oxygen sensor or MAF. Obviously the MAF is the first suspect here, did you replace it?
Secondly, with the transmission it almost sounds like your shifter isn't properly lined up, is there any chance your transmission is locked into "2" rather than drive?
And lastly, remember that people make mistakes and material objects can be fixed. There are any number of ways where your brother could have suffered a worse fate than your truck did, and the damage really sounds pretty light. I'm sure he feels awful about this, so don't be too hard on him.

Sounds to me like something got wet in the "puddle" with the miss and possibly out of adjustment like Tom mentioned on the shifting if it was deep enough to be stuck. Sounds like a bad deal for everyone involved. Hope you get things squared away.
Good news is when people borrow my truck they get a free driver also.

Thanks for the advice...
He does feel terrible and he's only 17 so Ill chalk it up to a learning experience.... About the MAF I haven't replaced it, only cleaned it there was what appeared to be a chunk of mud on the fine wire so I cleaned it with MAF cleaner. The rest of the intake tube seemed dry and clean, it just oozed around the filter a little bit. I never thought of the O2 sensors but I could see a connector getting wet and causing them to read incorrectly.
I will check the trans linkage tomorrow, that sounds possible but I do know that it goes into neutral where it's supposed to.

Yup! I'm assuming you verified that your shift lever is aligned properly. The next step is to connect your truck to a good scan tool such as AutoEnginuity. That'll tell you if there are any powertrain-related codes stored as well as give you the ability to see which gear the PCM is commanding.
The transmission is electronically controlled, so you're going to have to see what they computer is seeing. Where are you located? We have lots of members all over the country that would be able to help you with this. ON edit: Just looked, you're in Wyoming. Probably should have looked before asking.
