Convert 4x4 to 2WD?

Convert 4x4 to 2WD?
I spotted a forlorn looking 94 F250/7.3/AOD. It was parked out of the way at a dealer. Frame looks good. One cab corner needs fixed. The salesman says the trans is bad. I have a couple of good C6s from 6.9s. How hard would it be to swap a C6 in along with the usual stuff, etc. and put the truck on the road without a transfer case and front drive shaft? For those of you thinking I'm nuts for giving up 4WD, the axle code says it's limited slip and I'm looking at this as temporary fix until I can find the parts for a manual conversion.

don't do that.it'll just cost you more money in extra fuel.the old c6 was fair for it's time.too fuel hungry for $4 bucks a gallon.
just fix the e40d or replace it.you'll be loads of $ ahead even if you need to get a loan to find a reman/replacement trans.
trust me when i tell you this;
if you can't afford to properly fix the truck your about to buy when it brakes,then you can't afford that truck.
a ford ranger a car or an f150 w/ 300-6 are the economical options.
hd diesels trucks are for those with disposable incomes,or workers who earn our keep with them.
you can buy one if your in neither category,but you'll always find yourself struggling in life making these kind of choices.it;s just advice,im not telling you what you can or not buy.take it if you will or don't.
if you need a lower cost option (after searching used diesel and 4wd spec e40d's) check into a decent used zf5 with a good clutch (otherwise it could just cost you more anyway,and imho and inferior trans.though most on the interweb will disagree lol.)

There may be nothing wrong with the E4OD, it's completely computer controlled and the computer is programmed to "protect" it if it detects a potential problem anywhere in the drivetrain. People in general are just not aware of this and automatically assume the trans has crapped the bed when it could just be a sensor or wiring issue making it misbehave. Before doing anything to the truck is would be worth the effort to pull the codes to see what's flagged, several sensors outside the trans including the VSS and TPS are critical to correct operation and loss of these inputs will cause all sorts of bizzarre behaviour.

Let's just say I prefer a manual for what I'm going to do. The truck won't be a daily driver. I have a 1/2 ton with a 4.3 six for that. Both C6s have had few miles since a rebuild by excellent shops. Both are ATRA. If the 7.3 is on it's last legs, I have two 6.9s with plenty of miles left. Neither has head problems. One has a Banks I added in 1986. Both of the injection pumps are newer rebuilds with one coming from the only shop I'll ever use for a pump rebuild in the future..
FWIW, the only near local trans shop I know enough about to trust quoted me near $3,000 for a worse case scenario to rebuild the E4OD and R&R. I have never been a fan of overdrive transmissions unless they were divorced units.
Thanks for the suggestion to check out what's really going on with the trans, Conanski.
