long bed fuel tank in a shortbed truck?

So I have a long bed 1999 diesel truck I am selling that is pretty used up, so it will go for cheap, and my 2002 shortbed. I was thinking about swapping the tanks to get the larger tank in my shortbed, is this doable? I don't want to spend the money on an aftermarket tank.

edit, scratch the swaparoo used tanks are only $75 locally so What does it take to put a longbed tank in a shortbed crewcab truck?

Measure the length from the rear axle to the transfer case (if 4wd) to find out if it will fit.

I would be interested if you cannot use it and want to sell it.

yeah you gonna have to measure. I have a van and they shortened the tank to fit the 4x4 conversion cause of the transfer case.

I think if they could fit the long tank they would, but its just a hunch.

I'd love to swap in a long bed tank on my short box. I doubt it would bolt right up though.

I don't think it fits but subscribe for curiosity.

You'd probably have better luck with an Excursion tank, but you'd have to move the spare tire from under the truck.

ok I am confused, my E99 logbed supercabs tank is 60 inches long

my 2002 crewcab shortbed tank is 60 inches too?

the hanger straps are in the same locations relative to the front, rear leaf spring mount. it looks like the fuel pump outlets and hoses are in the same place relative to the rear spring mount. so the only thing I would have to do is use some extra radiator hose to extend to the filler?

But if the tanks are the same length where is the extra 10 gallons coming from?

I would use a diesel rated fuel fill hose. They are available at most marine supply stores. They are reinforced with a wire to keep them from collapsing.

I wouldn't recommend regular radiator hose. You need something that will stand up to diesel fuel, and regular rad hose may or may not.

The extra 10 gals may come from height or width, usually height if I remember correctly.

its height, the long bed filler hose would come out right at the rear cab mount. and the tank sits above the frame rail 1-2 inches, and there is no room for it at the cab. You would have to lower the tank a couple of inches to work and then still have to deal with the filler hoses.

Not worth it

A long bed tank holds 40 gallons? I never knew there was such a big difference in size.

yup after going from a longbed to shortbed its really annoying. I decided I would try out a shortbed since I was going to crewcab. so far I wish I had gotten a CC longbed but this thing does turn nicer than my old truck for sure.

I thought the long bed tanks had the same 44 gallon capacity as the Excursion tanks.

According to my owners manual it is 39 GAL. Tried to check gauge indication against actual fill yesterday but found the Safeway gas discount cuts off at 25 GAL. No help.
