I'm pretty much right there with ya on that, Russ. I'll try most anything, but some are just not worth the potential trouble!

yup the camshaft sensor/parts go where a distributor normally would be on a 5.0.

called and got an appointment for Wed. driving it to work and dropping off Tue evening. alignment tool came in the mail today.

thought i should wash it just because, idk i feel like if you bring a clean truck to a shop it looks alittle better about how you take care of it verses dirty. i think i'm also going to have them do the plugs well its there. i dont mind doing the plugs but since they have to pull atleast 1 anyhow why not?

this thing has some serious paint issues but looks ok from a few feet away.(lots of scratches/chips plus alot of small dings)

I still think you need to paint your Expedition and F250 to match the X and Explorer

I was hoping to follow this thread and duplicate the efforts. But, I will be learning more about the 4.0 OHV instead, and not worrying about the front drive axle--'cause there ain't one. Found lots of high mile AWD V8s, many with big **** trailer hitches. And interiors that would make a homeless guy shy away....

Got a clean '99 instead. Good luck with your project, will be watching for tips as needed.

color changes, true good ones including the door jambs and under the hood are a huge pain in the ***. i wont do another color change again.

the 4.0 OHV is a great engine, no speed demon but is reliable. that is what my '96 has in it. other then going through 3 transmissions in 130k miles it was great! well i did havfe to do the head gaskets but i digress.. i'll never own another V6 explorer. the SOHC is a ticking time bomb with the timing chains and the transmissions in them are weak at best.

i dropped the truck off today after work, they are going to do the plugs at the same time. should be done by noon tomorrow and i'll pick it up after work.

added the explorer to the insurance last night so i'll start racking on the miles after i get her back.

no problem, i know the feeling. i dont have the chip issue but i wish i could have done the jambs and under the hood of my f-250 when i went from grey/blue to orange. every time i open the door i cringe alittle. but the teacher in my autobody class that i painted the truck in did not allow us to do the jambs or under the hood.

Yea, after driving this one a bit, I notice the low end power is about the same, but it shifts at 4500 vs. 6000 for the SOHC. And I also noticed how much noise my SOHC was making on startup. The 5 speed auto in this shifts ok, so I'm hoping to have little to fiddle with.

I do need to fix the console. Do you have a service manual that would show the parts breakdown on the armrest? The '99 has a separate lid for the console, with the armrest hinging up. Well, the hinge part is broken, so I'm wondering if it's a separate part or if I need to look into getting the whole thing at the scrappy.

do you have the full length console or the shorty?

i got my explorer back today. ended up needing a coil pack and a different CPS as i bought the wrong one. now she makes no noise and i was on factory plugs..all very worn and 2 of them were slightly oil fouled but the shop said seeing as how its factory plugs at 100k not to worry much.

she runs GREAT idles and drives much smoother and much better power. i'm very happy it did cost me another $399 but i think it was money well spent. plus i only got dirty at work instead of coming home dirty and getting even more dirty.

For 399 and piece of mind, that's great, money well spent for sure
