what keeps the oil in the hpop resevoir?
i recently replaced the crank shaft in my truck and put everything back together. filled it up with coolant, oil to the level on the dipstick also filled the hpop reservoir an inch from the top. had everything ready to go when i started the truck everything ran fine let it run for a little bit than turned it off for the night. went out in the morning and checked the oil level. oil is over the dipstick level so i checked the hpop reservoir and it drained. so here is my question what keeps the oil in the hpop reservoir?
Thanks

The HPOP reservoir is simply a pit that is filled with oil, much like a bowl. When running, the LPOP fills the bowl and the HPOP pulls from the bowl to supply the needed oil. There is a lip which allows the excess oil to run down into the oil pan when it overflows.
If you are draining the HPOP reservoir, there are problems. If I remember correctly, it should never drain. Someone else will have to chime in on what the problems may be.
This is my understanding, which I believe to be correct.

There is a check ball and spring that is suppose to stop the oil from draining back..It is located on the top of the block drives side, in the front, right behind the HPOP reservoir..It takes a 3/8's ratchet and extension to remove it.
Here are some reasons for it to drain off...
1 something caught in the check ball
2 wrong HPOP gasket
3 IPR sticking open/ not closing all the way ( this was my problem)
4 Injector o-ring (not sure about this one but someone told me it could cause the bleed off)
when you did the bottom end, did you use any sealant to put the front cover back on?? If so, some of that can be stuck in the check valve..

i bought the truck used and the person who owned it before me had a tuner on it and ran it hard so which caused the bearings the fail and the crankshaft to need replacement

i have the right hpop gasket
if the ipr is stuck open how would go about fixing that?
the injector o-rings i dont think would be it
and yes i put sealent on but i made sure to not cover any oil holes or holes where any type of oil or liquid would pass through

ive repaced the ball spring and the cap that holds it all in
Did you replace the seat??

It can be took apart and cleaned, get the new o-rings from Clay or Bob

According to the shop publications, the IPR drain path was changed around 1996. The modern design drains up through a stand pipe so even a completely stuck open IPR valve should not allow the reservoir to drain. The HPOP gasket was revised as well. If the early style HPOP gasket is used on 1996 or later systems then the reservoir will drain down.
