climate control on the fritz?

Is the AC compressor supposed to come on when I turn the **** to defroster or floor/defroster? I can't remember it doing it before, but it may have... If it's not working right, any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks,
Tom Willetts

I wish it wasnt so, but my 94, and my 95 F150's both did it. I think in someone infinite wisdom it makes perfect sense. In the fall I usually disconnect the compressor to save on gas.

Heard a couple of different reasons on that one...

1) Pulls humidity out of the air as you use it for defrost

2) Ensures that you have a good chance to use your AC in off season to keep it "ready to go"...

I am sure an AC person would have a more technical explanation of #2 :-)

In any case, all vehicles I have ever owned have done this...My 87 F150 has an AC button, that you can actually push to stop the compressor if you wanted....not sure about the later models....I have seen this on imports too...

My .02 cents worth...:-)
