thinking of selling my sd250 for a excursion

I have a 01 superduty with the 7.3l, 6 speed manual and lifted with all the bells and whistles but im getting tired of shifting all the time and the kids are getting to big for the extended cab. I have always loved the excursions and have been tossing around the idea of getting one. My question is that they are basically the same truck just one is a suv. Also how much better is the turning radius on them then a long bed super cab. I have even tossed around the idea of getting a v10. I know the millage is not as good but how much worse is it in these trucks. RIght now I get 15 freeway 13 around town and 12 towing. Should I stick with the 7.3L? no way will I get a 6.0 not testing my luck that I might get a good one. I tow a 24 foot camper and my ****** pickup which is about 7500 pounds. What are common problems with these truck over the superduty? Thanks for any info. Also anyone between san jose and Monterey that I could stop by and look at yours and talk to you about it.
this is what I have now

I have a V10 and see 12 highway, 10 in the city and about 7.5-8 when towing a 7000lb trailer (calculated, not lie-o-meter). I went with a gasser mainly because 90% of the driving this truck will see are ~5 min commutes.

The V10 has the 4R100 also.

The Excursion from the front seat forward is the same as the SD trucks from 99 to 04. 05 SD V10s went to the 3 valve, but the Excursion stayed 2 valve in 05.

i'm on my 3rd V10 excursion, started out wanting a 7.3 and i'm glad i didnt do that. cheaper buy in/maintenance.

issues are the same as the super dutys with the exception of stock excursions springs suck and sag badly. many replace them with stock super duty springs.

i dont think so, i've heard of some guys having trans issues but not a wide issue like the diesels. i personally have never had a trans issue with my 2004, 2000 or current 2002. so long as the fluid is changed they seem to hold up pretty well. its not one of my concerns anyhow.

You could/would get 12-13 mpg with a 6.0 excursion. You would be able to go over 700 miles per tank (44 gallons). They require diesel knowledge and meticulous maintenance. The mpg is a wash when you consider the 15 quart oil change and 40-60 cent premium on the fuel. I have the V10 in in my work van and its been a great engine for the 170 k on her. If you tow much, no comparison the 6.0 wins hands down!

Yeah not a fan of the 6.0 wold get another 7.3. But kinda leaning towards the v10 right now just sense i work on diesels all the time. And maybe with the v10 i wont go crazy on mods like i always do with diesels, my gas trucks stay mostly stock

Whatever you do, don't get a 6.0! Any motor that needs mods to make it reliable is garbage and that's what the 6.0 is! 7.3 all the way!!

One other thing.....the Excursions do not tow as well as the pickups. THey need to have air bags, shocks, and steering stabilizers to make them tow straight down the road without white knuckling it! I didn't realize how bad my Ex was until I sold it for the Sub 2500. Something to consider if you tow near the limit with an Ex! A pickup tows night and day better than an Ex!

I love my 6.0. 7.3s and dodges are going to need transmissions, chevys need tie rods, injectors, transmissions...its mechanical its going to break

Either way, if it was a family vehicle i probably get a V10, just for simplicity

I will totally disagree with you on this! I have a 5" lift, 35's 3.73's and have towed numerous things with my Ex without white knuckles and yes I towed it stock also,,,
1.) 2004 Rag'en 27' Toyhauler, loaded appx. 11,500# yes weight dist. hitch
2.) 16' Enclosed trailer for my BBQ business or my BBQ only time it was bad was when we loaded all the soda and water as the last thing in,,, to much weight behind the axles.
3.) 16' car trailer 2300# with 79 F350 SCS 5600# = 7900#
4.) same 16' trailer 2300# Kubota tractor with front bucket and rear 3-way rotating Gannon blade call it 4500#
5.) same 16' car trailer 2300# and neighbors 200X 4x4 Suburban XL weight unknown close to 7300 maybe.
And never,,, NOT ONCE have I felt scared or "white knuckled" so I call BS!!
either your load was not set-up right, or something else, but don't blame it on the Ex...

As to the OP,, I would keep your SD and look for a V10 Ex cause once you sell it you are going to kick yourself~!
here are a few,,,
2002 FORD EXCURSION
little proud of this, but it is a 7.3
2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 Diesel
Ford Excursion 2001
ditch the rims, I got the stockers off my 02 for cheap

I already own to many vehicles. Hate maintaining them all (48 ******, 12 kia optima, 12 kia sportage wifes, 01 super duty, plus camper and car trailer don't need more.) I do love my super duty but don't need two tow rigs I barely drive my super duty as it is. I have had it for 4 years and have drove 15k so far. I figure I can get close to 16k for my truck sense It has so many new parts and upgrades. If I don't get that for it I will keep it and not get an excursion.
