EASIEST, least electronics diesel swap into my 78 ford f-250?

NO sensors, NO ECMs or ECUs, No "modules", NO computers, no hours of playing with a laptop to get it to run right.

Im looking for a VERY BASIC diesel swap. I need it to to have a mountain of torque, endure regular abuse, and be able to idle for hours on end while getting reasonable fule milage.

Im new to diesels, I know they are better MPG and more durable than gas engines.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? Cummins 4 or 6 BT? early powerstroke? what should I look for in a naeasy, yet dependable swap into my F-250 4x4?

Thanks.

88- to 94 ford diesel pickup.
no computer needed, just 12 volts to the fuel shut off switch and glow plugs.

your best bet is to look for a wrecked truck. this way you will have everything you need to do the swap.
engine, trans, transfer case if 4X4, and fuel tanks.

You can also do manual shutoff conversion to some older diesels. Basically leaves you with the starter and alternator to wire up.

Is the truck 2wd or 4x4? I am running a 7.3idi and ZF 5speed in a 69 F250 2wd, and if I did it again I would put the old body on the diesel donor's frame. You would have an easier time since the 80s wheelbase is 133", same as your truck should be.

Really depends on how you define a "mountain" of torque. Generally huge amounts of torque and mechanical diesels are mutually exclusive, unless you go for a really huge Cat or Detroit or something. But then your fuel economy will suck -- but it'll sure sound awesome.

The best compromise between ease of installation and power is probably a 7.3 IDI turbo or a first-gen Cummins 12v. Anything newer is going to be a lot more complex, but there would still be no need to mess with a laptop or fuel maps or anything like that.

I put an '89 Cummins in my truck. No electronics, minimum wiring. I can't vouch for how simple the install is compared to a 7.3 IDI though. 23+ MPG best recorded, a good solid 18 MPG average.

What ever you do, buy a complete donor truck. It will save you hundreds of dollars in parts and hours in trips to NAPA.

Depending on you're ability, and time you want to spend, you could maybe look at a dt360. They are all mechanical, cheap, and a lot stouter than a cummins or international pickup engine.

My diesel man here says, '93 or '94 6BT cummins, 12 valve and get everything; engine, transmission and your life will be more simple. And a grain of salt. (to go with the advice)
