For what it is worth, I was the 4th poster on this thread exactly 9 years ago. I still have that truck and it gets the same mileage it always has. Many miles have been added but it has been the most reliable truck I have ever owned. However, it really is a gas guzzling dinosaur and is used only when I really need it.

The 385 series engine is a great motor, I have an extra block and 60's era heads in the shed, someday I'll find the time to build it.

This was a cool thread to read...I had a 96 F250 Std cab, Lb EFI 460, 355 gears and 235x75 16's and got 14mpg daily and about 9mpg towing. I sold it to buy my 94 F350 4 x 4, EFI 460, 410's LS with 265x75x16's and now I get 11 mpg daily and 9 towing.

These engines are awesome in there own way and really vary only slightly. By the way I do like to drive it a little harder. Faster take off and keeping up with the traffic.

On propane

So what are peoples thoughts on the 460 on propane I found an 86 f250 ext cab on propane I drive 100km a day all hiway kms
and the bc government must of given some sort of grant because everyone in Kamloops it seems, runs them on propane so just wondering is it fesable to drive on propane with the 460?
I had one with a 6.9 diesel it got like 20mpg

Sure, why not? Are you talking about a dual-fuel setup, or just a straight propane system? The problem with the latter is, well, it's pretty hard to walk down to the gas station with an empty propane tank to get you back on your way.

Also, do the math, as propane costs less per gallon but also has less BTUs or energy per gallon so your fuel mileage per gallon will be lower. You can do some searching online and read for as long as you would like about this topic as there is a lot of information out there.

I have a 460EFI with a E4OD, 410's, 37's, full length headers, no cat, flowmaster, air horn delete, egr delete, K&N, high energy ignition and get 9-10mpg floored or not offroad or on road. But I can bury that speedo and pass my bud with a 99 F350 TDI tuned superchips on 38's (appox. 120mph top speed) in a 6K lbs truck

man those mpgs are pretty rough....I found a NICE 460 on autotrader (while looking for a diesel) and it is making me seriously re-think my 460 vs diesel decision....have to do some more research before making a decision

Oh and for you newbies, welcome to the forum. We have a lot to teach you and hopefully we can learn from each other.

And BTW, we typically let a thread that's more than a month or two old die off...
I didn't catch the date either until I read that post!

I almost fell off my bed when I read that he had to put $45 in his tank per week.

Man I miss the good ole days. I really hope gas can get down below $3.00 again.

I can't stand the pumps that cut you off at random dollar amounts. I've found some at $75, others $100, they all drive me bat**** crazy. I HATE having to re-swipe my card to start filling up again to get the last few gallons in.

Don't expect an answer from that guy for 2 reasons. 1) he's full of crap and 2) that was the only post he ever made on this site, 2 years ago.

We're gonna have to rename this the "Holloween" thread or something.. it's been resurrected what.. 4 times now.... like a good horror story it just won't stay down.

That said.. I suppose it's a good sign that some new members are exploring the vast repository of info available on this forum, and hopefully they can distinguish the questionable data from the valid like this example...

An F250 with 15" tires on it? I don't think so... so it's more likely this guy has an F150 with a 351 in it that somebody put F250 badges on.

Yeah, this thread keeps going, haha. Does seem like a good reference thread for different MPG numbers with different 460 and gearing setups.

My carb'd 460 in my '88 F-350, C6, 4.56, 33"s, 3" lift gets 9.5 MPG in town, 10.5 - 11 MPG highway @55-65. "RV" cam, high rise Stealth intake, 1" riser and Edelbrock 600 CFM carb, long tube headers, true duals

Will have 37"s on it any day now. May help highway MPG slightly. C6, 4.56, 33s has me turning about 3100 RPM @65 MPH right now.

Happy to keep this threat alive, why start a new one- its easier to access all the info on one thread

I'm putting new heads on my 460 this July 4 weekend, thinking of putting a torker II intake with a 750 edelbrock just to see how it does- but I doubt it will ever pass emissions testing

question is- will headers improve gas mileage? I've heard alot of talk of intakes improving mileage, carb, headers, electric fans with 3g conversion, etc- and then some guys say they get 12 mpg no matter what - stock or mod.
