1999 f250 V10 surges

I have owned this truck for 2 years and it is running as good for me as it has ever has at this point. When I accelerate it kinda surges a bit. It's not a smooth acceleration every time though sometimes it does. When I am at 40 mph in overdrive and step on the gas it starts to bump as if units not firing properly. If I take it out of OD it accelerates fine but sometimes surges. Is that normal?

Here is a list of what I have done recently;
Checked fuel pressure, it's 38 at turn the key, 30 idling and around 35 while driving and does not go under 32 any time.
New fuel filter, o2 censors, plugs, coils, two new headers, new egr valve, egr pressure sensor, new egr tube.

At this point I am a bit flustered at what it could be. I am leaving it to the experts to ponder. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I checked for vacuum leaks today. I have a vacuum solenoid in the pic below it does leak so i removed it and capped off the vac hoses with the plug in the second photo. The vac solenoid was replaced last year and never worked. I am not is % sure but I think its supposed to engage the auto hubs and i believe create vac for heater settings. Anyone have any history with this issue and would it cause my bad vac to make my truck run poorly?

Could it be a bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)?

Have you cleaned the MAF (mass air-flow sensor ) lately ?

It is located behind the air-filter housing . Use an MAF cleaner ONLY .

Cleaned MAF 2 days ago. I renoved the O2 sensors this morning and took it for a test drive. It drove much better. I am having a new cat installed ATM, fingers crossed.

changed the cat, runs much better. when in OD at 45-50 it still struggles to jump into a lower gear, it hesitates a bit. less surging wich is good. I have a scanner, i just dont know how to upload info to pc.

Here is the " basic check " with a scanner (it should pass this test) ;Do the following " live data" test with engine hot (normal operating temperature , Closed loop).


1-Fuel Trim (Short TermFuel Trim –STFT & Long Term Fuel Trim –LTFT )

Should be between +10% and - 10%
If so, your engine is OK . Otherwise ( if it is +/- 20 % or so , check injectors ,fuel pump etc. )

(PS. When engine is cold , not all sensors are working ).

2-RPM
Idle RPM 650-800 .

3-Spark Advance (Ignition Timing )
15-25 degree at idle
About 45 degrees at high idle

4- O2 Sensors
B1(bank one-cylinder #1 side )
S1(sensor –before catalytic converter( CC) – upstream of CC )
S2( sensor after catalytic converter(CC) – downstream of CC )

One monitors the engine the other monitors the catalytic converter .
Voltage should be between 0.1 -0.9 Volt ( 0.450 V most efficient )

Also ,check if there is any "pending code" and "emission test readiness" lights ( green, yellow , red ) , all of these will give you some clues about the puzzle you are dealing with .

Again this is a very basic test . You may need to search for other live data values for further diagnostic work . You-Tube could be a good source .

Based on the ball-park figures I wrote earlier ;

I see there is a slight deviation at Long Term Fuel Trim 1 and 2 (LongFT1 @ -14% and LongFT2 @ - 12.5% ) . Both of these values are slightly out of range (normal should be between +10% and - 10 % ) .

Also one of the oxygen sensors (O2B2S1 - Bank-2 , driver side ) has a barely acceptable 0.175 (yet lower than the optimum reading ) .

It is the easy part till here . From here on, it is going to take a lot of computer research (especially @ you-tube ) see what kind of corrective action is required ( other drivers with similar symptoms) . This kind of diagnostic work is going to take some patience and time , hang in there .

PS. I presume you checked for pending codes and emission test readiness lights and there was "no clue" at those departments ( like a clue pointing at cylinder number ).

Did you resolve your "vacuum leak issue " for sure ? if not , you may have to do it before anything else .

i just capped off the vac solenoid as seen in the 2cnd photo. when i plug the vac solenoid to 12v bat charger it moves as if it wants to work but no cigar. how do i test the plug on the firewall?

A quick search says :
41 oxygen sensor circuit indicates system always lean

I took a quick look at the live data you downloaded later on . Some seems to be OK . and some appears to have see-saw values with O2 sensors and fuel trims.

If I were you, I would check vacuum-leak first (all the hoses, that includes PCV hoses -both passenger side and driver side - especially 90-degree elbow on throttle on pass. side ) . Another vacuum related area is EGR valve (its hose and diaphragm ).

These are all no-cost DIY items .

OH KAY I pray this is my last question. I hooked up the fuel pressure gauge, it was at 35 at idle. when i disconected the vac hose to the fuel regulator the pressure gauge did not budge. I watched a u toob vid and I recall the guy saying it should gain a few pounds but am not sure. I wanted to check with the pros before I bought any more parts (fuel regulator).

Another Q, there is a green vac line that connects to the EGR valve. Does that green hose connect to the fuel pressure regulator?

Here is practical testing for "pressure regulator " from V-10 archives .


Fuel pressure should be 28-30 psi at idle, 38-40 psi with vacuum disconnected at the regulator.

Disconnect the vacuum at the regulator and watch the gauge. If it doesn't change, and there is vacuum on that hose, the regulator is obviously bad.

The other side of the coin is , IF there is no vacuum on that hose ( as in a vacuum leak somewhere in the system ) , that is not the fault of pressure regulator .

My 2003 has a different EGR system , so I can't help with the hose question.
