429 new motor valve adjustment
i have had my 70 429 rebuilt, i am going to be running adjustable roller rockers, none of the lifters are preloaded with oil yet and they are dove-c heads. my question is should i preload the lifters first and what is the proper procedure for adjusting the valve lash??

start by turning the ening over until you notice the exhaust lifter strat to rise. Tighten your intake rocker until you feel the push rod stop spinning freely. Then give it another 1/2 turn. turn the cam until you see the intake valve start to open then do the same to the exhuast rocker. Do this in the firing order of the engine and you wont have any problems.

I like doing mine before putting the intake on. You can watch for the lifter plunger to move. You can turn the engine until the lifter for the valve you want to adjust is on the base circle of the cam, then turn the nut until you see the plunger move then go 1/2-3/4 of a turn. Most lifter manufactures say that you don't need to prime their lifters. The motor does run rough and rattle for a few minutes on initial start up until they all get pumped up. I usually go in order #1 thru #8 so you don't jump from side to side.
