Swapping timing covers

This is kind of a two part question, and kind of stupid too. Well my truck (1994 4.9) was leaking oil and we discovered the timing cover was leaking, we bought a used timing cover and it looks like it works, but I noticed that the seal was different to my old one, it was smaller. I also noticed that on the new one we bought said 78, 79, 80 and on the old one it said 94. I guess my questions are would the new timing cover work on my truck and I just have to get a new seal, and does the numbers mean the year that it was off of. Thanks!
