ozdatman, what MPG do you get, what motor do you have. Thats also something to take into consideration. 7.3l will get 15-16 mpg....

Anyone else's thoughts on this potential trade ?

hairyboxnoogle,
lets pretend no swap. In fact I know there would be no swap. I don't have the time for all that....
just apples vs oranges....

I would keep the IDI. Fuel economy, power and you never know when you might need some muscle.

Unless you really ~really want/need a crew cab, stick with the IDI. If you must have more cab, consider selling your truck and looking for an IDI crew or extended cab. I think you would find the cost of operation with a gas, auto, crew cab F350 to be disappointing. The bigger the truck, the greater the diesel advantage.

For exampl: 89 F350 crew cab diesel dually 1500$
1989 FORD F-350 DIESEL DUALLY 4DOOR

All good points. I (like most of us) have dreamed about owning the 92-97 F series crew cab truck and now the door is open.
but

I love this diesel. smaller cab, yes, but great pickup, great sound, I am starting to get the oil burner thing. I may not be as mechanically inclined with the diesel yet, but I am reading all the posts on this forum and its sinking in.

I have a family, abeit just my wife and young daughter, and the Standard cab, while a little tight, works. Also the diesel is not my daily driver, at least not yet.

Any more comments would be appreciated and acknowledged.

I still say pass on the gasser, keep on the lookout for an extended cab or crew cab diesel. They can be had for a decent price if you have time to shop. Pay attention to gearing, axle and transmission as this is huge in the mpg department, and you say you don't tow/haul, so look for 3.55 axle gears and overdrive! Crew cabs are F350's, and tend to have 4.10's. This can be changed, but keep in mind that a non-OD 4.10 geared truck will struggle to hit 15 mpg (much less if gas), while a 3.55 OD diesel truck can sail in the low 20's consistently on the highway.

Thanks again.
The more I think about it the more I want to keep my diesel. The MPG story above is important to me, regarding gearing, as I see other fuel options I haven't read about yet but heard about (biodiesel fuel). And if all I'm hauling is a 25 lb toddler, I think a f350 may be an overstatement. Now if it was a 4x4.....

its a very good trade.i would make it (if i didn't haul anything either.)
of course the opinions in this section will be biased towards the diesel,so you have to expect that.the newer, cleaner, larger truck fits your bill.your not concerned with the FE difference since it's not a daily driver and you have a car.gas is cheaper anyway,as well as maintenance.things are not drastically different like they once were.trade up and don't look back.if or when you need a diesel truck, you can get one again latter.it's not like they're rare and you'd never be able to buy another or something lol.

I agree 4x4 and diesel trumps crew cab. If you want some extra space you could get a canopy to go camping and such.

i would not even think about that trade. the 351 is only going to get around 10 mpg in town and maybe 12 mpg on the road.
