2000 f250 v10 transmission problem or tow mode?

Hey all. New member and first time super duty owner. Picked up a beauty of an f250 with a nice body and high mileage (192k). I was driving it home from the purchase and noticed that whenever I floored it or tried to go into "passing speed" the rpms would spike and it would not shift or accelerate. No clunking. No engine noise. Everything sounded right. It was as if it was meant to do it. I would let up on the gas a bit and the rpms came down and it would accelerate like normal. I have an automatic transmission. I tested it a f more times with the same results. Using my google-fu I learned of a towing mode present on other f250s but couldn't determine if mine had it. The description of this mode sounds exactly like what mine was doing. It is equipped with the towing package, but I can find no place to engage or disengage towing mode. I don't tow anything and don't really need this mode, so I'd like to disengage it or atleast figure our if it is that or a tranny issue. Thanks. Sorry for the long first post!

Your truck does not have the tow/haul mode that was not available until the torque shift trans was introduced. You have a 4R100. Does the light on the end of the shifter blink when at all when this is happening and if not make sure the light works by pushing the button. this will lock out overdrive and the light should stay lit until you push the button again or you restart the truck..

Nope. The overdrive light isn't blinking and I can turn od on and off. I was reading up on the transmission adaptive learning thing. The previous owner used it for towing collectible cars between states. Maybe the transmission learned it needed more torque? I was thinking of disconnecting the battery to clear out the memory and then trying it. What do you think of my theory?

The transmission doesn't learn anything like that. It only learns how long a shift takes from when the computer commands the shift until it measures that the shift has completed from data from the speed sensors.
