Burning smell in rear of truck

I've noticed a burning smell (kinda like burning rubber smell) coming from the rear of my truck. It doesn't appear to be the tires. I recently have 4 inch blocks installed with new shocks and Nitto trail tires. A few days ago I noticed it and then again today. I just can't pinpoint it when I get under the truck and it goes away within a few minutes. Any suggestions what it might be? Thanks

Might your truck be in a regen when you shut it down? It smells nasty.

I've never noticed it but maybe your right. I just took my truck for ride and didn't notice the smell. When I 1st noticed it the other day I thought it was smoking. The performance is fine so I'm not sure.
Is it possible that with bigger tires (mine are the Nitto Trail 295/65/20, about 35.5) it's more likely to go into regen more often. Hope that's not a stupid question. Thanks

I don't think that would have any bearing on it. I make a lot of short trips so mine regens a lot. I really didn't notice how often it was doing it until I got the Edge. I thought something was burning at one time too, but realized that was the issue.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the smell of DPF in the morning.
Just messing around a bit. But you have checked along the exhaust to make sure nothing is hitting or rubbing on it right?

If nothing is hitting it then most likely it is the DPF arrrommaa. Smells like roses

Everything looks good to me. I haven't noticed the "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" as much lately but I haven't driven it that much either. Funny thing is that I've put 25k miles on this truck and I've only noticed the smell twice this past week. Thanks for the feedback

Ours does the EXACT same thing! We went to dinner one night and got home it smelled like I just did a burnout. It doesn't do this every time, so I figure it must be a regen cleaning the exhaust filter.

Well, active regeneration (version 2.0) was supposed to be a bit more seamless but I am surprised you made it 25,000 miles without noticing that burning smell.
I agree with the others, if nothing is touching then it's an AR.
When you smell that, temps post DPF are around 1,100°F.

hear any exhaust metal expanding and contracting as well? Classic shutting it down during a regen smells and sounds.

BTW, if you listen with the engine running while standing near the back, you'll hear 7 ticks about every minute or so if it (was) in active regeneration.
The AR will shut down after 10 seconds in park but the tick will continue in cycles for another few minutes.

This is in addition to what senix mentioned about the metal expanding/contracting which of course you'll hear after shutdown.

Looks like I have a case of the regen's. Thanks guys. If in doubt go to ford-trucks.com! This message board has caused me to spend some money in upgrades but its also full of good advise. Thanks again

Check your mudflaps if you have them, chances are they are hitting the tail pipe and melting, on our 6.4L it does that anyways, smells like burnt rubber after, look at the mudflap it will be melted a little, just my experience anyways.

I had that smell on my 2006 F250, it was the right rear brake dragging.

First time I noticed the smell I had just parked it in the garage. Thought it was going to blow so I jumped back in and pulled it out and posted a note here. Realized shortly after, thanks to these guys, that it was the regen.

The smell is very distinct.
