Exhaust Manifold Leak

Hey Guys,

I'd like to hear from anyone who has ever been down this road -
I have a bad exhaust leak at the manifold on the drivers side (71 Ranger XLT w/360). I went to the parts store, and bought a set of gaskets, as my friend and I are gonna attempt to fix it. He's done this before - so our plan is to soak it with PB Blaster over and over again, then heat up the bolts, let them cool, etc.

But, I just discovered something: When I bought the exhaust manifold gaskets, I got the more expensive ones with the "heat shields". I was just looking on line, and apparently I need the heat shields AND a separate pair of exhaust manifold gaskets?!?! Or, is the thing I have all I need?

If I do, in fact, need to get the extra set of gaskets, which one goes on first (closest to the head)??? Also - I don't need to put any goop on these puppies, do I? Just torque them down to specs, right?

Thanks,
Bob

I would use strictly the shield style. As I recall they are all metal and seal like a gasket. At least the genuine Ford ones were. Ford used metal there if they wanted some of the heat from the exhaust manifolds to go in to the heads. If some of that heat goes in to the engine's cooling system there is less chance the manifolds will crack.

Thanks for the input.
Here's the kind I have:
Fel Pro MS95000 Fel-Pro Exhaust Manifold Gaskets=

Here's the other kind w/o Heat Shield:
Fel Pro MS9812 Fel-Pro Exhaust Manifold Gaskets

My main concern (from something I read on line) is......Is the 1st one listed (w/Heat Shield) an "all-in-one" Gasket & Heat Shield Combo? In other words, if I use that one, I won't need another exhaust manifold gasket to go along with it?

I noticed in the description of the 2nd one (w/o Heat Shield) it says to use that gasket WITH the existing Heat Shield.

So.....If I get the exhaust manifold off - clean up the surfaces really good - Do I then only put on the 1st one up there listed by itself, and torque her down?

Also - Do I use some Goop?

Thanks,
Bob

Yes. I see it states with old shields. I would just use your 1st choice. the new shields only. That is how Ford sold it. No goop.

How about these? They are listed as replacing the correct Ford numbers.

Those (pictured in your post) are exactly like the Fel Pro ones that I have. They have the curly thing (heat shield?) at the top of the gasket. So, then, Drum Roll........that item (gasket w/curly thing) is the ONLY thing that gets replaced. There IS NOT a secondary gasket that goes along with it??? I'm just having a tough time with this concept of putting on a new gasket and using the "old" heat shield. I can't grasp that.

Thanks,
Bob

The c1sz9448's are what Ford listed as going inbetween the head and exhaust manifold. No secondary gasket also.

Ford did not install exhaust manifold gaskets on FE engines excepting 406/427's. These engines did not use heat shields.

C1SZ-9448-E Left & C1SZ-9448-F Right .. Stainless Steel Heat Shields / 1961/71 Ford/Merc Passenger Car 352/390/410/428 / 1965/67 F100/350 352 / 1968/76 F100/350 360/390.

C2SE-9448-B & C2SE-9A457-A are the ID engineering numbers marked on the shields themselves, are not Ford part numbers.

Heat shields were installed to deflect heat away from composition spark plug wires. 406/427's used copper core plug wires, didn't need heat shields

The thing is, when the manifolds warp, "thinner than a dime" heat shields may not solve the problem, it may be necessary to install aftermarket composition exhaust manifold gaskets.

1965/67 F100/350 352 & 1968/76 F100/350 360/390: Same right (passenger) side exhaust manifold.

1965/67 F100/350 352; 1973/76 F100 360 have a heat riser valve on left (drivers) side. Use a different exhaust manifold than...

1968/72 F100/350 360/390; 1973/76 F100/350 390, 1975/76 F150 360/390.
