Haha josh, not this time no I was driving home and all of a sudden the truck developed a low speed wobble. It felt like I had an oblong tire on the passenger side. it would only happen at a slower speed of around 20 mph or so. So I pulled over and shook the ever living crap out of the truck and didn't see anything unusual. I limped it home and checked the brake fluid and the reservoir for the rear brakes was pretty much dry.
Today I pulled the brakes apart and didn't see anything unusual, so after a bit of fiddling me and a buddy noticed the axle had an odd amount of play in it. Next thing I know the brakes and springs are on the ground and I am pulling the axle out. The bearings looked ok but they have almost half an inch of movement... I assume that's a bad thing so I am planning on getting new bearings, studs pressed in then pitting it all back together and re-bleeding them. I also have a new wheel cylinder going on.
Do you guys know of it is common to put rtv on the end of the axle? I know it's for making a gasket but that kind of made me think that it leaked in the past and the PO put rtv on to keep it from leaking. It just got me thinking.

i can't say i've had a 9" apart myself to know where RTV goes, but in general, a gasket surface may have RTV to help it seal, but if we're looking at a seal where the shaft goes through a rubber seal, install a new seal and lubricate the seal with oil or grease - and never put RTV on the sealing lip of such a seal, maybe on its outer bore where its pressed into if thats sloppy, but even that isn't preferred.
for the bearings to have any significant movement means something isn't set up right or the bearing is destroyed. half an inch is a helluva lot, as if the bearing was sitting out from where it belongs and suddenly shifted.....

I am thinking this bearing being loose is what I was feeling. That the only thing I can think of to explain it, the rim wasn't loose (this time) and everything besides the axle felt solid. the driver side has play in it if you yank on the wheel, it moves a little bit but I've been told that is normal. The 4 bolts holding the passenger side into the axle were all tight and they didn't look like they were moving at all. But there was a small amount of gear oil on the backing plate when we pulled the drum off.

When you have then replace the bearing make sure they check
the axle to see if the old bearing had moved. My 79 had problems with
the axle sliding out of the bearing. We also found that the ends of the
housing tube were a bit worn and loose. The fix was some thing my
guy had to do to the axel to keep the bearing from sliding.

I'll see what the guy says. I am just going to take it to Napa and have the machine shop do it real fast. I probably should pull the other axle out and have that bearing replaced too. But at the moment I am a bit busy with finding a new job. This plumbing one isn't working out too well, I am going to apply for the AutoZone near my house. They have an opening and if I could score that I would be happy.
