So what does this do?

So I'm getting ready to put things back together and I believe I'm a bit out of my depth. Really I've got 2 questions. The first is what is this thing with the red arrow pointing to it? It had a ton of stuff connected to it, but doesn't look like it does anything important.

The second question is about vacuum setup. With an offy intake, efi manifolds, and an edebrock carb, I'm pretty sure about a few things but others I'm a little hazy on. The intake manifold vacuum connects to the pcv vavle, but there are 2 connections, a 3/8 and a 1/4. Looks like the 1/4 should go to the pcv then do i just plug the other one? Then from there, there are 3 ports on the carb. A ported vacuum (this should get capped?), the full time vacuum port (???), and the PCV port (duh). Soooo where do I plug in the dist vacuum advance?

Well I posted a little early, nevermind about the carb vacuum questions, I just realized it came with a handy DVD that explains it. Well I feel kinda dumb now...

Still not sure what that thing is with the red arrow, and what the heck do I do with the smaller pcv port and the intake manfold ports?

Block off unused vac ports . My pcv valve came with a plug for the small port .

Ja, that's the charcoal canister in the photo. Just leave it to help with the fuel tank venting if nothing else. There isn't a place to connect it to an Edelbrock carb.

Ahh thanks, it's going to stay there, but it'll just be for show (it looks pretty doesn't it...)

Anyway, so i think I've got the vacuum worked out, the manifold vacuum goes to the brakes, so here's my list:

Manifold vacuum -> power brakes
Main carb vacuum -> pcv valve
ported carb vacuum -> dist vacuum advance

Annnd that's it. For some reason I was thinking this would be more complicated.

I run the vacuum line to the brake booster to a ell fitting screwed directly into the manifold. I think my old Edelbrock carb has a place in the back to screw in a fitting but it was plugged from the factory so, meh.
